7 month Malaria strategy
Heading back to travel all of India for 7 months. When my wife and I were there for 2 weeks, It was easy to decide to take Malarone for the whole trip.
In four weeks, we will be there for 7 months and the anti-malaria strategy is less clear. First of all let me say the whole thing is a bit crazy as I know 99% of the billion indiginous population doesnt take the meds and are fine. I think the smartest plan is to take meds when and where the risk is highest. I will probably take doxy and my wife Malarone. We will always wear deet. We will be in most regions but the southern and middle east coast. My real question is: In what regions are we realisticly at risk for catching Malaria? |

I have never taken malaria medication or worn Deet. In saying that I have two friends who are Mumbai natives who have both had malaria. They live in South Mumbai.

you dont need to worry about malaria. use deet and cover up. if you are just going to touristy areas, you need not even do that. i have spent 15 years traveling asia and se asia where malaria is endemic. rural lao, cambodia, indonesia....
if you can, wear light clothes as well. mossys love black! |

This is a very good question - one has no problem taking malaria drugs when travelling for 2,3,4 5, weeks but when one is looking at 3,4,5,6 months it is unrealistic taking malarone, larium, (mefloquine) etc for such along period. Especially when one looks at the possible side effects and contraindications on CDC website: http://www.cdc.gov/travel/regionalma...tm#malariarisk Unfortunately, there are no recommendations on how long one should continue taking these drugs.

dont forget that the time of year of your visit makes a huge difference. during dry times there wont be many mozzies at all. try to organise your itinerary so that you avoid the worst of the wet times
