$300 vaccine?!

so i went to the travel clinic the other day, and everything was fine except the doctor suggested i get a vaccine for japanese b encephalitis at the cost of a mere $300. i don't have $300! does anyone know how necessary this is, or if i can get the same prevention a little more cheaply? i'm planning on backpacking for a couple months, mostly in the south, but who knows where i'll end up. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

go figure the ultimate cost!

Redrooster:
Check out what the Center for Disease Control has to say:

www.cdc.gov/travel/indianrg.htm

(scroll down a bit and you'll get the specifics)

You may be able to find (somewhat) cheaper vaccines at university or city run travel clinics. It also may be a bit cheaper outside of The City.

I have avoided the issue by limiting the amount of time I go and not going during monsoon.

Getting this disease, like malaria, is more than I'm willing to pay: so I do like the good people at the CDC tell me to do. I have seen people who have contracted mosquito borne diseases (there are plenty of them out there) and I never want to go there, personally.

On a paranoia level, with 1 being a senseless idiot unmoved by any danger to a 10 being someone cringing from fear of anything remotely painful......I'm about a 9.

Its an interesting question. Its a truly nasty disease leaving an impact after survival. However, the vaccine is only modestly effective. Some people react to the vaccine and others don't. Certain areas are known for JE such as the Nepal UP intersect, AP and such. I base in AP but haven't ever had the nerve to go for this one..

Japanese encephilitis

Hi i'm a bit like you. begrudge paying £80 for that out or my tavel money i worked so hard for waitressing for 7 months woring split shifts and weekends man!! But my doctor highly recommended it with a passion but siad its up to me. I'm taking the plunge!! Rather pay £80 than my life. I'm travelling all over India from north to South over 5 months and can't afford to take risks. Some people may tell you not to bother but i would say get it, India is very cheap to stay in. You are probably very rich compared to most of them so splash out and maybe have a shorter trip!! I don't expect this is what you want to here but it was a tough decision for me and i've booked 2 shots of it for this coming Monday. Not looking forward to it i must say and £80 is alot of money. or even $300!! It's bad i know but not as bad as the disease. What about Dengue fever then. Should we have that too?? I'm not so sure about that one. Don't think i'm gonna bother unless my intuition tells me otherwise between now and when i leave. anyway what ever you decide good luck on your travels and enjoy the journey

you know, i ended up not going through with the encephalitis vaccine because i'm not gonna be in india for too long, and i'm probably not gonna be spending too much time in rural india. but i'm sure going for 5 months would change my thinking. and as for dengue, i don't think they have a vaccine for that, but apparently one's being tested. i think there's not much you can do that except to keep the mossies away. good luck.
