2 questions
would you or do you, wiley India vets get the rabies vacination? I have travelled a fair amount before and never considered it but have never been to India.
question 2, as far as I can see, the only drawback to Malarone is price. But, if it was the same price as larium, which one wouild you take? (I can get Malarone for a reasonable price, but Larium (melfq I guess) is cheaper. Thanks ok, one more - do you take mossie nets or are they provided when needed? (budget hotels) I'll be there in July/august if that matters. Thanks |

don't forget that you can get meds over in india for really cheap. i bought a couple of lariam pills before leaving the states (they ran me something like $15/pill usd) and then picked the rest of my pills up (no prescription necessary) at a pharmacy in chennai for less than $1 a pill... lariam was okay, but is pretty notorious for giving people crazy dreams. i dealt, but was glad when i took my last pill.

These things have been well covered in earlier threads. So after I've finished wittering use the search engine provided to research these matters in depth!!
First the rabies vaccine, really it's up to you, but in all honesty it is pretty easy to avoid being bitten/licked by a dog/bat/monkey, something to bear in mind when making your decision. Next malarone or Larium, again for a fuller explanation do a search but you do not need either of these drugs against malaria in India the recommended drugs are a COMBINATION or Chloroquinine and Palaudrine which I think are a bit cheaper than either of the above mentioned drugs!! Some hotels will provide mossie nets but not many, take a net with you or buy a little electric gadget that you stick in a wall socket, these slowly release a deadly odour that kills mossies but is apparently harmless to humans! I've used one for years, works just fine until the power goes out. Although the stuff seems to hang in the air for about 1 1/2 hours so you do get a bit of leeway. The Indian anti mossie lotions/creams/sprays are just fine as well no need to bring too much expensive Deet products with you! Happy Traveling!! |

Where do you get reasonably priced Malarone? Larium is something I would not recommend at all. Doxycycline isn't bad and it is dirt cheap in India. I never had the Rabies but I now take a good light nylon net..

Mosfree is a very good anti-mossie lotion, from Godrej it costs about 27 Rps and last two of us about 5 days!!
Hear what you saying about citronella Bryan but does that really work for you??? We used it here in Holland last year and even the Dutch mossies laughed in our faces, we concluded it wasn't much good! |

Used it throughout Malaysia and Indonesia and we found it done the job ...perhaps the Malaysian formula is better ...perhaps ..Deet is banned in malaysia if I remember right
For a deet based product ...Jungle fornula is the best i've found Its given out to the Scottish Forestry commission to its workers against the ferocious midge and we found mossies took one sniff and legged it or shoudl that be winged it ... Wouldnt recommend using it alot though as deet can be harmful over long use Bryan |

i brought deet lotion along and virtually never used it. i preferred dealing with the mosquito bites to that toxic stuff. yech. the coils and electric plug-in thingys didn't really help me either. glad i was taking the meds. i like to think that the mosquitos like me cuz i'm sweet. ha.

Indian odomoss is the best anti-mosquito cream I have ever used. Safe for babies too! Even tackled mamoth Canadian bugs in Algonquin park.

My DEET repellant (Cutter's, which comes in stick form) cost me only about US$2.00 more than buying the Mosfree. That's not bad over 12 weeks... and I didn't have to remember to buy it at the shop before sunset!

And while we're on the subject.... click here for a game of ODO MAN... "The evil mosquitoes are hot on the trail of Odoman, as he seeks to reach the pack of Odomos, which will repel the mosquitoes for ever. To get points, Odoman can also collect the white jewels, but he has to be careful to keep out of the way of the mosquitoes."

Cyber Hippie I'll see if my aprtner remembers the name of the brand we used and post it on the thread or IM you
A useful thing to know.... When you get bitten rub some tiger balm on the bite and in a cuople of minutes the itch will go and the bite vanishes a lot sooner ...One of those essential little things that every pack should have |
