Maybe it's just me, but the 50% deet I applied on my hand started to irritate in a matter of minuted so I washed it off.. so I don't trust it (it seems to be as lethal to me as to the mosquitos
). Is such a reaction common, or did I just apply to much of it (with my usual eagerness to try stuff)? As such, I wouldn't even think about using 100% deet ![]() |

If you have a reaction to DEET, you'll probably get it at lower concentrations as well. It could also be some of the inert ingredients that don't sit well with you. Try a different brand.
I used the 100% deet with no problem. But ended up only using it a couple of times, the main time being at the Mumbai airport. An amazing number of mosquitos there. |

I used 100% DEET directly on my skin regularly during a trip to Sri Lanka last year and suffered no adverse consequences. In hindsight I probably didn't really need it but I hate insects so will do all I can to keep them away from me!! Does anyone know what health problems (if any) DEET really causes?? I'm heading to India in July and am now unsure whether I should be using it. Also does it only keep away mosquitos or most insects?

DEET has been used for so long and in such quantities that there is not much doubt as to its safety. Of course there are people that are sensitive to it, just like there are people who are sensitive to peanuts.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEET Cases of serious reactions to products containing DEET have been related to misuse of the product, such as swallowing, using over broken skin, and using for multiple days without washing skin in between use, for example. Always follow the instructions on the product label. |

100% Deet. It may or may not harm YOU but it will certainly eat through most plastic and vinyl--in fact nearly any synthetic material and take the dye off leather! Great for taking off fingernail polish!!

You are so right! I used the 100% deet stuff and not only did it stink but it melted my sunglasses! I left it behind in my room and bought some odomos instead which was fine.I still have it and take a sniff now and again to remind me of India! ![]() |
