You cant compare it to beer anyway... a better comparison would be whisky , rum , vodka etc...

I agree that they are expensive , but still not that much , even in the Indian context. when we were in the UK recently , everyone around us was drinking wine and the average bottle appeared to be in the region of 7-8 pounds , local stuff which comes out to be about 550-600 INR.

At one place in Mumbai, there was quite an average bottle of Australian red carefully locked away in a case - I think the price worked out to about $50...

Where is 50$ for a bottle of wine and where is Rs 300/-. One should be ready to make an effort when wanting something and not just expect the genie to bring the wine bottle each time.

Maybe we can get some constructive criticism from people who have actually swivelled Indian produce. Peace.

Please do continue this discussion. I'm quite ignorant about wine in India. I'm following the discussion with great interest.

Nasik

Being in Gujarat, one can travel upto Nasik in Maharashtra via Saputara, the only hill station in Gurajat and taste wine. Nasik is the largest wine producing area in India with many popular brands like Sula etc. based out of here.

Infact, there are liquour shops at Maharashtrian side of border where people come and drink. The prohibition is only to not allow drinks but nothing such for drunkards. So, people come and flock this place as I have been told.

I guess the price is a bit old but the Champagne definitely cost less than Rs 1000/- per 1 litre bottle. But if the price is correct then maybe the Taxes have been reduced or the process of reduction has started.

But I must get back at least 2-3 bottles next time I go to Delhi or if someone drops in from Delhi.Rs 600/- is really encouraging.

You are absolutely right. I remember when we drove from Nashik to Saputara in 2004, there must have been about 50 'wine' shops lining the main street of the little village on the Maharashtra side of the border just before entering Saputara !

Cheap Indian Wine:

Vino brand red, white and rose wine from Chateau Indage, is available in Mumbai for around Rs 125 a 750ml bottle. It is not bad, when well chilled. Available at the wholesale liquor shops such as at Sukhsagar near Opera House for about 110 a bottle.

squeezing the goatskin

Hey Anastasia, don't believe those who dis Indian wine! My partner and i have had some quite drinkable (drunkable?) reds. but then again we do make our own wine at home here in Australia so our standards might be quite low. can't remember the names but they were from Maharashtra. we bought them in Rajasthan and Diu, on either side of 'dry' Gujurat, though. i haven't tried to buy wine in Ahmedabad, but there must be ways... there MUST be ways. just watch out for Modi and his Hindu extremists.
Also, btw, don't miss the calico museum of textiles. it's amazing!

I found the wines that were available in 2004 were quite rough, although we found a sparkling in Jodhpur that we carried with us for New Years Eve we had in McLeod.
In 2006 they had improved,(tried a few at Darjeeling once again for New Years), however I think it is what you are used too, as we are quite spoilt in Australia for choise and variety. Yes, I agree the cost is prohibitive in itself when the costs of beer and spirits are so reasonable.
This trip we will arrive in India in Ahmedabad. Can anyone tell me if Customs will in fact allow you to carry in the duty free allowance?

Happy Travels

Thank you for keeping this going! I have been told that you are allowed 2 bottles in your suitcase (obviously, not carry-on) each person. So invite a lot of guests!
I did not think it would be so difficult to get wine in India. This past May, I spent a month trekking in Nepal and we found Spanish and French wines in tiny villages along the trail! Yak cheese and red wine with the local fruit became a treat like no other after many hours of hiking! And the prices were about $10-$12 US a bottle. Why is foreign wine so hard to get ? , or so expensive? Or is this just around this dry state.....
