Not all those who wander, are lost!

Hi,
I was wondering if christmas to new year is a quiet time in diu, or will it be flooded with local tourists, since it will be vacation time in India? regards, |

Can't comment on Christmas, but we spent 4 wonderful nights in Diu last month at Hoka Resort - very chilled out place about 2 minutes walk to Nagoa Beach. We visited various beaches and fishing villages and markets and I must say the Fort at Diu town is amazing. There stretches of vacant beaches you can spend time at - suggest you hire a bike, very cheap - as well as enjoying the locals have fun at Nagoa.
We also had a great lunch at Fatima De Suza house. She cooks Goan food to order. For about Rs300 we had a large platter of fried fish, crabs, prawns, rice, salad, stuffed quid and prawn curry. It was fantastic. You can find her near the Church, just ask the stall shop for Aunty Fatima. Wonderful experience. Also the icecream shop Ram Vijay everyone raves about here at Indiamike was fantastic, we went twice. We loved Diu. |

1- Altogether avoid diu between the 25dec-1jan? 2- be there on the 27-28-29dec? kind regards, |

I have no idea what Christmas would be like. It's true though: As you may know, Gujarat being a dry state with the exception of the Union Territory of Diu (and possibly Daman?), where booze is cheap to boot, Gujaratis like to flock there en masse on weekends to get absolutely stonkered. Barring any secluded beaches unbeknown to me, this is not the time to laze on the beach let alone if you happen to be a woman, so better to retreat to your room with a book or do some bicycling around the island. Peace & tranquility will return when the weekend's over.
So how this reflects on the holidays I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if not too favorably. Would be nice to have the lowdown on it though.

Walking on Nagoa Beach (fully dressed - no swimming costumes) regardless of the day/weekend, we attracted a lot of attention including being photographed/videoed, shaking hands etc. People were very friendly and we only encountered a couple of men who had been drinking, but again were friendly and tried to get us to join them.
Three French women living at our hotel went to the beach every day for sunbathing and were the centre of considerable attention from young men. But they still went every day. At one stage we saw three men playing 'catch with a ball' almost right on top of where they were on the beach!!! A young German couple and another young English couple hired bikes and reported that they had a lovely time swimming on some secluded beach. I personally would not have felt comfortable swimming in bathers on the beach. Indian women were swimming in their clothes/saries and men 'in their underwear'!!!! It was fun to watch though. Don't know about night life, as all the people who stayed at our hotel appeared to eat and drink there each night. |

Go have a swell time
If I forgot to say: It's a wonderful place really, or so it used to be, and so I can well relate to Gohome's comments. Both the town and the beaches. Mildest and therefore safest waters I've seen anywhere in India too.Should people get in your face, just walk the other way, kind of thing. |

Thanks for the replies. I'm off to Udaipur instead, mainly 'cos Diu seems too complicated to get to from here, and I want some time to just chill. Safe travels, kinky-lizzard and Happy Solstice

obrigado Diu!
Oh that's a pity. We were in Diu just before last christmas, it was fine. (i'm not sure which is worse...getting woken before the crack of dawn by taped christmas carols blaring, or getting woken before the crack of dawn by taped hanuman chants in Pushkar, or getting woken before the...)
Staring locals were no worse than lots of places, the beaches further from town were bliss (though a bit murky for my Australian tastes!), the Gangeshwara mandir blew me away with it's beauty (it's devoted to lord Ganga, in a sea cliff grotto), the goanese food at Heranca Goense was miraculous (not to mention the orgasmic "cold coffees" in the morning!) and the beer in town 27rupes! a great place to de-stress. shantih |

Regarding Heranca Goesa, does anyone have their phone number? I called several times the number found on indiamike hotel review 02875-253851 but no one picked up. I also emailed them but haven't heard back yet.

No idea. Have you checked the web for it? I find other numbers (or do I? Hm, not sure.) Its name seems to be Herança Goesa, but I don't think such diacritics should affect any search queries.
A call to your local phone directory operator no matter where in the world you are may also help, provided the hotel's phone nr. is listed under that name of course. Obvious, I know, but people seem to forget such simple steps. |

I don't know, like I added later, I may have hastily thought I spotted a number for them which actually referred to another place. If you search the web for them, you'll find just what I can.
I looked up some state tourism sites for you but they don't look too promising; in any case, you might try to enquire with these folks: http://www.diutourism.com/ http://www.gujarattourism.com/ |
