What do y'all think of Diu?

My husband and I are coming to Mumbai in April for some medical treatment. We will have a couple of breaks in between treatments (of varying lengths but lets just say a 4 day average not including travel time -and we might end up taking some domestic flights for such travel).

I wonder what you fine folks think of Diu? I have been to India several times but my husband has not ever. He really wants one of the places we visit to be a place that I have never been and quite honestly Diu was the only place I could think of (while still being reasonably not to far from Mumbai).

thoughts? I'm not into a party scene and I've heard it's kinda rough there.

Thanks!

Hi Amanda,

Welcome to the site and India too when you arrive! For your breaks inbetween treatment i do recommend Diu, Kutch, and Gir in Gujarat. Some other more close by options between Bombay and Gujarat are Marve, Manaori and Gorai Beaches, Palghar, Sajjan, Jawahar, Bordi, Silvasa and Daman. You could study each place and decide for your self.

Good luck with the treatment.

Hi Amanda in India

We spent over a week in Dui late last year and would return to visit there again - no problem.
I would warn you that there is a definite drinking area and if you are after a quieter stay try up the hill in a portugese home.

Hire a motor bike and enjoy the island, and the afternoon siestas.

WE went to diu for about 5 days last november. When we first arrived we found it a bit much, we were staying in town in the Apana hotel which is a bit of a magnet for booze cruises from the mainland but actually turned out ok. The beaches arnt exactly pristine (watch out for turds!) although it is possible to find some that are ok. the island itself has a lovely relaxed feel and its defintly worth hiring a scooty which isnt that expensive. Food is pretty good if you like seafood and drink is very very cheap. however if you want beautiful beaches you may be better going south from mumbai. also be warned you will be stared at and photographed even if you dress modestly in a bathing costume.

I spent a week in Diu in early January and was a bit disappointed at first because I had expected something like "little Panjim" in Goa but there are few Christians left in Gujarat (or Diu, for that matter), the churches are collapsing, and so are the Portuguese buildings. As a vegetarian, I was also a bit disappointed with the variety of food.
On the plus side: Diu is very quiet, very clean, zero harassment in Diu Town - not like India at all!
I stayed in Diu Town (Hotel Samran Palace) and found it quiet enough - possibly because the New Year's crowd had already left.

Nagoa Beach was disappointing. The beach is not very well kept, and the harassment factor was 100%. Groups of men of all ages just go there to stare at and harass female western tourists. It is absolutely horrible, and this is what lots of other tourists told me. By the way, I wasn't sunbathing. I sat fully dressed on a bench at the end of the small beach and went swimming only once, for about 10 minutes, and in a swimsuit, not a bikini.

We loved Dui because there was no hassle from shop sellers etc. We were there in April/May 08 and went to the beach (can't remember the name but it was local to Dui and was practically deserted when we were there (midweek though which may have had something to do with the lack of people, certainly domestic tourists anyway)) and got no hassle at all much to our amazement. We stayed in the town centre at Super Silver Guesthouse which was cheap, clean and fine all round for us. Worth hiring a scooter and having a cruise round the island which is enjoyable although I agree I wouldn't have spent any time on Nagoa beach. We also enjoyed wandering around the fort. Don't recall where we ate but remember that the local bar we frequented was cheap and friendly. There were several and I forget the name of the place but it was fairly central.
