Sports in Ahmedabad

Hello all,
I will be moving to Ahmedabad by November '08, and am just starting to research the area. I've gotten great info here, but I think I've got a new subject that has not been asked!!

We are both avid bicyclists and runners. First of all, are there parks in the city where it would be safe for a woman to go running alone? I would like to live near an area where we could have enough outside space to do so, but is that asking too much in a city of so many people?

Does cycling exist in this part of India? I have not been able to find anything. We both mountain bike and road bike. I did see mountain biking in the Hym. mountains, but would like to bike several days a week close to home. Would love to become involved in any bike or running clubs.

Any help here?
Thanks so much,
Anastasia

Hello Anastasia,

Welcome to Gujjuland.

Ahmedabad has a lots of parks and there are enough people that you can be comfortable enough.

If you are staying in the western part of the city ( Drive In, Vastrapur, Satellite areas ) then the favourite haunts are ATIRA, Parimal Garden, Law Garden etc. They might get a bit crowded in the evenings, but in the mornings it's fine.

Cycling though is not a big fad... there's a Firefox dealer who's just opened up - on SG Highway - Owner is Samir Dutta ( do let me know if you want his number ). He might be able to guide you if there are any cycling clubs.

Hope that helps...

Thank you for your information! I will look into these park areas when we research areas to live in.

I would love to have the number or email for the gentleman you mentioned.

Additionally, since it gets so hot in some seasons - are there health clubs also in that area?

Take care,
A

You are welcome.

Have PM'd you his number.

As for health clubs, you'll find lots. Should not be a problem.

Hello, not sure why you can't pm...I emailed the admin to find out why. ....
Regarding these parks - are the living areas around them desireable? What can you expect to pay for a rental. I was hoping for a small house.
Any direction would be appreciated!

(Sorry for this standardized response): New members do not have the PM (Private Messaging) function yet, neither to send nor receive. It takes a certain nr. of posts + period of membership.

You could create a free disposable webmail address for the purpose, then post it here. Or discuss what you need on the board. Be aware anyone could contact you on that address pretending to be the other. Posting your private email address is not advised, for all the obvious reasons.

Anastasia,

Contact # of Samir Dutta - 98240 39 464 and office number is : 079-65416116.

As for residential areas near the parks... yes.. there are quite a few and anything can be found as per budget.

You'll have to decide based on your purpose of visit and budget.
