Solo Female Traveler in Ahmedabad?
Solo Female Traveler in Ahmedabad?
I'm thinking about volunteering for 2 months in Ahmedabad where a homestay will be provided. I've heard some horror stories from females of Western countries traveling alone in India, and I'm hoping it isn't all true. First of all, I'm not blonde and blue-eyed, I'm a Chinese Canadian who has lived in Canada for most of her life. This is my first time traveling alone anywhere, and also I don't speak any Hindi or Gujarati. I wonder how the locals will perceive me and would I get too much unwanted attention. Would it be safe?
Any insights would be appreciated... thanks.

Welcome to India & Indiamike
Hi,
It may not be all true but yes you will experience a bit unwanted attention.
My suggestion is take precaution like avoid late nights alone in the streets etc and be safe.
See human nature is too complicated and available in tons of varieties so every country has all kinds of people and its only 1% who are actually bad and will create the bad image for rest of 99%.

Don't worry too much. Lots of women of all ages (and with any hair color
) have travelled all over India and enjoyed it. You will get a lot of attention, including unwanted attention, just because you are a foreigner, and Ahmedabad or Gujarat in general might be a bit more difficult in this respect than other places. At least I found it more difficult.
However, India is basically a safe country. Most of the unwanted attention is staring, which can become unpleasant. Just ignore it. Keep your wits about you, don't go to isolated places by yourself, particularly not at night - just avoid dangerous situations as you would also at home. The most dangerous thing in India is traffic. This is my opinion.
As for the language: I found Ahmedabad a little more difficult to navigate than, say, Mumbai because many autorickshaw drivers didn't seem to understand English. Staying with a family will help you get used to things and get around. They'll be able to explain everything. I suppose they do speak English.

Cli..You will be pleasantly surprise to find how hospitable people in Ahmedabad(and in Gujarat) are.! Let me assure you Ahmedabad is considered one of the SAFEST places in India..way above Delhi. Enjoy.
Gujarat is one good peace loving place. No as such security issue, but you need to remain street smart and don't forget to bargain for things or services you are buying. If travelling by autorickshaw insist on meter fare
