shipbuilding yard in Mandvi (near bhuj)

Mandvi ,On the banks of the Rukmavati River, just south of the bridge, you can visit the still-active shipbuilding yard. Craftsmen still assemble ships out of wood,

May you still visite this site ? may you walk there between
the boats and take pictures wherever you want ?
or did you need a permit ? or did you need to pay your visit ?
where to look eventually for the entrance-tickets ?

let me also know if you may give me an address/prices of
a hotel somewhere in mandvi ?

thanks,
geert,

Yes, you can visit

You can still visit this site and walk among the ships being built. You can even go up into one to see how it is being made. The craftsmen are very proud of their work and will let you wander thru the ship yard. You might want to identify the person in charge and give him a small tip. Wear shoes that can get muddy.

As for hotels ... I visited, though did not stay at the Beach at Mandvi Palace hotel. Accommodations are in permanent platform tents with comfortable furniture about a 1 minute walk from the beach. The restaurant (great for snacks and drinks) is right on the beach.

Bhuj is about a 1/2 hr drive away and there are numerous places to stay there too. I've stayed at both the Prince Hotel and the Iliark Hotel and enjoyed the Iliark Hotel better.

Journey far.....
Walk in Peace.

Here is a picture of the building that is built like a cabin and even inside is the replica of the cabin. Shivji bhai Bhudiya.

For every dhow that is built first a model is made and then it is made by hands. Perfection continues through centuries. The Dhow could be as long as 150 ft.

When you climb onto the Dhow do you realise how big the ship is!

I can't post any more pictures. Maybe tomorrow. But there is no need for permissions. Yes, best to be invited onto the Dhow. And be prepared to climb the absolutely vertical ladder onto the 30 ft high Dhow. Have a good visit.

ebb & flood

thanks for info & pictures !

I'm still wondering if the moment of visiting depends much
on the water-level ?
you have a big difference there between ebb-tide & flood-tide ?

I again tried to post another picture but couldn't do so!!! There will be many dhows in the making and you can almost walk upto a few. The one that we climbed was just off a small jetty and even our feet were dry. The time was around noon. So climb up a dhow and work out the appetite for lunch at Osho lodge...

Please go to the edit button for your post and look at the bottom of the box and hit 'go advanced'. You will then see another screen that shows a paper clip like symbol (next to the smiley), click on that. It will help you upload attachments to the same post. Pls follow size restrictions.

Let us know if that does / doesnt work. I'd like to see more images of this area - looks interesting (especially the model)
