Please recommend cheap hotel in Surat

Hi everyone,

I'll be visiting Surat at the end of july and it would mean much to me if someone could recommend accommodation in Surat. I'm looking for a basic cheap, clean and safe hotel for two nights.

I found many hotels here on IM and elsewhere, but I really don't know anything about them (or city) and that's why I could use some help. Some of the hotels I found are: Hotel Oasis, Yadgar Hotel, Prince Hotel, Diamond Plaza Hotel, Yatri Hotel, Sunrise Hotel, Golden Plaza Hotel, Balwas Hotel, etc.

Please add your recommendation for the hotel which is not listed but is OK to be in. Or warn me if I should avoid one from the above.

Thank you!

Well, most of the hotel you have mentioned are fine. But the tariff for some of them may be on the higher side.

You can get an airconditoned room for as low as 10 USD / 500 INR per night, pretty decent with attached toilet.

Now, a lot depends, what area you wish to stay? A good area to stay would be Athwa Lines, a posh area which has only one affordable hotel & other affordable /cheap hotel are near Railway station area.

Thank you for fast reply.

Well, I guess those railway hotels will have to do. Also, most of the cheap hotels I found on the internet were located near the railway station.

I go to Surat to (hopefully) view the eclipse, so my only worry would be if there are rooms available. But I guess I'll find something.

Speaking of the eclipse, since you live in Surat, what place/spot would you recommend for viewing the event? Initially I thought of renting a cab to Hazira beach but since eclipse will occur right after the sunrise I will have to watch it from the city. Are there any popular hills, parks, open spaces suitable for this?

I know there is/was observatory in the city but now it's closed, if I understood correctly.

Unfortunately, there is relatively small amount of information about Surat available on the internet, which I think is a pity. I plan to write about it here as much as I can when I return; someone else might use that information.

Thanks one more time.
