Places in Gujarat!!

Ok I know better than anyone that most of this info is here on IM and I could just search for it but it's been a long day here on IM, so indulge me!!

I'm going to be in Gujarat in late March early April, so it's going to be steaming hot!

So where to go and in what, order, we'll likely kick off in Ahmedabad and the stepwell nearbye.........??? Maybe see Gandhi's Ashram
Fancied Girnar hill, Saputara(does this offer any respite from the heat), BHuj and the park at Sasan Gir.
Then there's the Sun Temple and that wonderful place on the coast that someone here mentioned, with the Fire Temple, where was that again??

Any ideas guys??

Cyber,

I was in Gujarat last year in February.I'm sure you'll enjoy the trip. I have started going by train from Bombay to Bhuj and staying there 8 or 10 days for the Kutch area and the coastal towns of Mandvi and Mundra (worth the visit). From Bhuj by sleeperbus to Junagadh, few tourists visit the town but is really nice, did the Girnar Hill climb.

From Junagadh by a cosy slow train to Una/Delwada for Diu, understand that I've missed Dwarka and the temple in Somnath recommended places. After few days lazing around Diu went to Palitana (another climb) and from Palitana to Ahmedabad a town I don't like. I have moved from Ahmedabad to Patan the old capital of Gujarat, really nice days there and in the Sun Temple of Modhera. From there I went to Baroda to visit Champaner (world heritage site) and Dhaboi and Chandod.

From Baroda back to Bombay by train.

I can give all the information about hotels etc.

All the best

Jorge

CH

I was in Gujarat from the 1st April till 8th a couple of years ago and the heat was OK, just the usual slow walking was OK for me.

I was only in a village though, so nothing to recommend, I'd previously been to Diu and Ahmedabad, but nowhere else in Gujarat, so can't help.

Well there's the Asian Lion, some amazing Stepwells, a Sun Temple, I like the atmosphere of Jain sites, Girnar hill is a great example, as is Palitana, A interesting little place called Udvada, which apart from the Parsi fire temple sounds like a great place to hang around! Saputara offers some respite from the heat and sounds like it could be a hidden gem of a hill station, the train ride sounds interesting too. long time since I've been on a narrow gauge train!!

Oh did I mention food.........the finest in India

And now I have to go an look at all the stuff Jorge posted!!

you could visit mandvi...it's a cool ship yard where they still build ships out of wood. if you can make it to one of the local beaches too, you might be able to see some wild flamingos. there's not many people in this town...and we also had the best thali ever here, it had about 16 different 'dishes'. this is just a small town that is fun and interesting to explore.

Ahmadavad - Love Garden - some cools tibetans used to sell stuff.
Got to Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar (1 hour bus ride)- It is a temple + Spiritual amusement park.
Go to Bhavnagar (4 hour bus), go to Alang ship yard (where world's ships come to die)

forgot the temple in Somnath, not to be missed

I'm sorry not to have picked up this thread up earlier. My sister and I spent a month cycling around kutch over christmas. We ended up cycling west of Bhuj and ended up in a town called Nalia. Both of the town guest houses were full so we were told that we could ask at the Jain temple. From that momment on the world of beautiful architecture, friendly converstation and delicious and plentiful food made it possible for us to survive on our bikes. To the north of Bhuj it's hard going. The rooms that we stayed in were clean, spacious, the hospitality was amazing however it is vitally important that as western visiters you abide by all the rules. No drikning, smoking, avoiding injury to all living things, eating before 6 in the eveing... Our addiction to visiting Jain temples has remained with us now in wintery london when me, my sister, her Hindi teacher and husband visited the beautiful new temple at Potter's bar out side london. I fully recommend a leisurely tour and around the region and do make the effort to go to Lakpat. A really ..... can't think of an adjective to describe it, just go. You will feel like you have reached the edge, on many levels. Have fun!
