Palitana
Last days of February I'll be visiting Palitana and I'm not sure if is better to stay at night in Palitana or to go to Bhavnagar. Aside the dharamsalas it seems that there are very few and basic hotel/guesthouses in Palitana. It is worth to stay in Palitana because the pilgrim's ambiance, etc.., even in a very basic guest house????

Dear Jorge,
Palitana being a prime Jain pilgrimage centre had developed like anything. It's better if you stayed at least for two days (that is one night). The day you arrive you may climb the mountains which could take any where between 1.30 - 2 hrs depending upon the speed (you may also take a Doli where in 2 person would carry the chair in which you will be made to sit). Coming down would take lesser time. On the mountains & in the way there are numerous temples which you may have a look at. It would be better if you can do the pilgrimage without taking any food on the way & also while returning. However there will be numerous sites on the way where you can have water. After you come down you can have as much food as you want as there are plenty of food stalls selling Lime Juice, Sugarcane Juice & Pomegranate Bhel (Mixture of some 7 - 8 itmes). If you have climed then you might be tired & would feel like resting the rest of the day. Otherwise you can take a look at other temples around (which are in plenty). Also there is a Museum which you can go to. The next morning you can move to your next destination. Staying overnight is not a problem as there are lots of Guest Houses, Dharmashalas (With A.C.) & hotels in Palitana. My suggestion is that you atleas stay there for 2 days to get a feel of Palitana. Happy travelling. |

Hi Jorge,
I stayed in Palitana itself, I can't remember the name of the guest house, but it's located right across the main road from the bus station. Very clean rooms, friendly staff, I got a single for 100 rupees. I arrived in the afternoon, stayed the night, and did the climb up to the temples at dawn the next morning. Made it back to the bus station in time to catch the bus to Una (for Diu). Enjoy it Jorge, one of my best days in India so far...... |

Enjoy! |

Highly recommended you stay in town the night before and get a dawn start. It's long and hot, and there's a lot to see atop!
One of the best in India, for me anyway ![]()
