Thanks for the compliments for the photos
Without entering into any controversies, I would like to add that there have been several news reports that thanks to this dam, a huge portion of the crops sown will be saved this year. Else imagine that on one hand crops would have died due to lack of water and on the other hand there would have been heavy losses due to floods. Gujarat govt. has given permission to all farmers to freely draw water from its canals to water their farms. I wonder what would have been India's progress if we did not have Bhakra nangal and all various previous dam projects. Has it become fashionable to protest against all big projects without offering any concrete alternative solutions. Regarding respectable madam Medha Patkar, I believe she was also involved in protesting against the Nano project in W.Bengal resulting in the project being shifted to Gujarat. Now I wonder who has gained and who has lost in the bargain. As far as I know, W.Bengal has lost a lot of other projects after loosing Nano project, while gujarat has welcomed Nano project with open heart. No wonder, Gujarat knows where its heart lies [in our pockets] ![]() |

without knowing the background or details of many of the situations A.R. writes about i can't really have an informed opinion, but...
i really like her stuff! sure, a balance must be found. but the current extractive/growth/waste system is WAY out of balance. voices like hers are a vital challenge to business-as-usual. ![]() |

" The attempt to tarnish all those who oppose any developmental project in India, with an anti national brush has dangerous connotations.
The argument goes something like this: not only must you expect that a dam on the Narmada is for the betterment of the nation, you must also not raise your voice about the plight of the displaced. That this must happen is a given and must be accepted as such. If you do so, you are then 'opposing the development' of the country. That you could a conscientious citizen, reasonably patriotic, and yet question the development paradigm is clearly totally alien." wish i had written them words - but i havent. read here... an introduction the sardar sarovar dammed the dammed where everything that is wrong - If the dam is completed, its reservoir will submerge 245 villages and 376 square kilometers of land, and will displace approximately 240,000 people. The canal network will cover another 800 square kilometers of land, but the people who have to make way for it are not officially considered to be affected. The Supreme Court decided that the dam oustees need to receive cultivable and irrigable replacement land and housing plots with civic amenities. The TISS report finds that the state governments have never complied with this binding order, and that the replacement land for the oustees is not available. the scams, damns and whammys with so much apparent filth - can tehelka ever be far behind... this post has not been put together to my satisfaction - there are so many many layers of deceit... havent even touched the political angle tad weary. BT cotton fields anyone ? tribal kids from rajasthan - average age 8 years old... - who gives a fig about the tribals anyway ![]() :brishti |

thanks :-b
i'll look out for it. i'm reading 'Soul Mountain' and 'After the Deluge'(about the 3 gorges project in your northern neighbour). planning a trip in jan. i really regret not going there when i was living in china in '89. still sounds worth a look-see. the dam should be full by this year. different place, similar situation. on a different note, the abc(australia) is screening a 3 part bbc doco about the Ganga. beautiful! awesome! |
