Mumbai to Diu + activities

I know of the Jet airways flight from Mumbai to Diu, but that is too expensive for me at the moment.. I am on a budget, but also on a time crunch :-). And I have heard that the flight is cancelled whimsically.

From Mumbai, I see the Air Deccan flight to Bhavnagar which reaches at about 3:30 pm.. would anyone know how far the bus stop is from Bhavnagar Airport, and whether there will be buses leaving that late for Diu? Is it ok to reach Diu that late? Can I rent a gearless scooter at that time?

I also see some mention of Mumbai Diu buses.. can anyone tell me from where one gets them, contacts of the travel operator, etc... And what time does this bus leave, so that I can time my reaching mumbai accordingly.. there cant be too many of them.

What is the optimal way to reach Diu from Mumbai? Suppose I reach Mumbai in the morning, and do not want to take the flight, how can I reach Diu by next morning? I see the Bhavnagar option, but probably it is better to reach Diu in the morning and save a day's hotel than reach at midnight!

What time does the bus leave from Diu for Mumbai? Is it possible to carry huge pieces of baggage (international travel suitcases)?

If I end up taking the flight, can I get gearless scooter rentals close to the airport/ nagoa, or do I need to go to the city center (near the bus stop)?

Are watersports on in July?

Will most hotels allow 3 people in one room?

Thanks,

Sid

There are a zillion bus travel agencies beneath the flyover at Dadar (E). Take Any WR or CR train (except harbour line), and turn east from the station, walk about 1/4 mile to the main road. If you don't see what you're looking for start asking. You'll find a luxury night coach (some are even bunk bed sleeper style) that'll get you there in comfort, if not style. No hassles about getting a ticket, either. Just bring you money and buy a ticket. Piece of cake.

personally i find diu/daman not worth at all, but ofcourse u have to try it personally, all trains goin towards any part of Kutch/Gujurat do stop nearby Diu, don't recall the station but would find out and post it. also it would take 3 1/2 hours to get there from mumbai.

Your talking about Daman, not Diu.

I seem to remember Vapi being the closest station to Daman.

Since you're still looking for answers, btw Iyou said you could just arrange a bus from Mumbai:

I've stayed in Diu in the late nineties so take all this with a grain of salt.

Getting near the place late one night I stayed in Una which is like the mainland access point. There was no transport going that time of day or nothing that I found remotely reasonable. Transport should be cheap but if they know you're stuck, well you know the deal. Una was hardly an exciting affair I'd say but at least we could crash for the night.

I also see some mention of Mumbai Diu buses
Iyou has addressed this I believe, see above here.

There must be faster ways but if you're stuck get a train to Ahmedabad. From there work your way by train to Delwada which used to be the nearest railhead or by bus to Una, whichever works out handier, or a clever combination of the two (bus is probably a lot faster). I've done it from Una the other way around (to Ahmedabad I mean) but I was ill at the time so I don't remember the details, sorry. It wasn't difficult. If you arrive at a practical hour a bus from Una to Diu was a couple of rupees at the time, probably a couple more now, it's about 10 km.

Sure.

Rentals used to be in town but may have changed.

There were none at the time and I hope they have a ban on jetski's. Swimming goes on year-round.

Quote:

Yes. Often works out cheaper too as they'll just put in an extra bed for a relatively small extra fee. May result in a cramped room. Several-person rooms are commonly available as well.

The bus option suggested by iyou seems to be the best solution, I saw a bus with beds when I was in Diu, I was told that it was going to Mumbai and the journey time was 24 hours.

You say your time is restricted, I think you should reconsider going to Diu.

To get off a plane, then do a 24 hour bus journey will be very tiring, you will need a couple of days to get over the travel before you can start to enjoy the place, so at least 5 days would be needed in Diu.

Udaipur to diu by train...

udaipur to ahmedabad= 250 km by road. ahmeadabad to diu= 400 km.

There is a train from udaipur to ahmedabad which is slow. Then from ahmedabad to Verawal are two fast and comfy trains leaving around 11.00 and 7.00 in the morning and getting to verawal around same evening. From verawal to diu (95 km) is by road (bus about 3 hours..Rs. 50 or so) ..(taxi 2 hours right upto yr. hotel. (rs.600 to Rs.900/-).

You should be able to get the exact train timings by refering train time table, to steven bers timetable/postings.

It can be far more convenient to take the bus from Udaipur to Ahmedabad and then take the overnite direct sleeper bus from Ahmedabad to Diu. The bus journey from udaipur to ahmedabad is about 5 hours. The buses leave ahmdabad at nite, 9.00 pm and 10.00 pm (for Diu) from 'Paldi char rasta' Anil kunj complex. They reach diu next morning at about 7.00 to 8.00 am. The bus agencies u should use are 1. Sahjanand travels 2. Shiv shakti travels and 3. Bharat travels. All located at the Paldi cross roads. I am writing from a cyber booth and don't have the tel. numbers of these bus agencies. U could search some earler posts on diu and get the details.
cheers

Is it really 24 hours by bus from Mumbai to Diu.
I do know that it is about 20-24 hours to Mumbai from Bangalore by bus. But for Diu?
Steven, are you sure?

I also travelled between Diu and Mumbai in the late 90's via 2x2 pushbacks. It was a long ride, over 20 hours with a change of bus in Vadodara.
