Just enter "saputara" into Google or Wikipedia and you'll find the answers to your questions and many more.

Saputara is nice place to visit. However, Dangs district as a whole is beautiful.... though it'll be dry at this time of the year...
IF you would like to spend a couple of days in Dangs district then you can go to the forest guest houses at Ahwa, Mahal, Subir.. Vist Gira falls... but also make sure to visit Giramal falls... ( the locals might tell you they are the same )... ask to visit Giramal falls near Subir... the forest dept's Guest house at Subir is beautiful...

The Dangs and Saputara
Quote:
Stayed first at the Forest Log Hut at Saputara, where we met a retired Guj. Conservator of Forests. When he realised that we were more interested in jungles than hill resorts, and did not mind sporadic power cuts, he arranged for us to spend the next few days at the Forest Rest House in Mahal, a beautiful 100 yr old colonial structure in the midst of a very dense, very protected bamboo, teak and mixed forest. We drove there via Ahwa from where the DCF radio'd the Mahal caretaker to expect us. Picked up some provisions enroute. The Rest House is built on a promonotory jutting out over the Gira River about 60m below. Trust the Brits to get the best locations. The local tribal caretaker took us out on many excursions into the forest, including to the old British built fire watching machan from where the entire Saputara ranges are visible. We saw mostly Paradise flycatchers, there were plenty and they stood out in the dry forest. The bamboos were like cathedral arches, higher than anything I have ever seen before. At night thanks to no light pollution, the Milky Way was visible in all its pristine glorey. Thoroughly enjoyed our few days stay there and I can well imagine that in the monsoons it must be really superb, although getting there on the bad roads would be a pain. We returned via Waghai and Vansda through to NH8, spending time at the National Park at Vansda. But I digress, Im sure you wanted to know about Saputara the hill station. It is no where near as touristy as say Lonavala. There is a valley and a small lake with a ropeway going to a viewpoint, also a small tribal arts museum and lots of restaurants and eateries. It would be warmish now as its not particularly high. Needless to say, a very large percentage of visitors to Saputara head to the booze shops just across the border, so you can imagine what the atmosphere is like in the evenings during peak holiday period ! Try travelguru.com for hotel bookings. Outlook Travellers Weekends from Mumbai also has a list of several hotels. |

http://gujaratforest.gov.in/home/contact.htm We stayed at the Forest Depts. Log Hut in Saputara and the old Forest rest house at Mahal in the Dangs forest. The former was booked through a friend, then working for the Guj. govt.; and the latter was booked directly at site through the DFO at Ahwa, through the recommendation of the retired PCF whom we met at the Log Hut. Vansda is very small, you can visit it in a few hours from Waghai. I preferred Mahal. No one ever goes there, so there should not be a problem in getting a booking. We hired the local caretaker of the rest house as our guide. Hope this helps. |
