Hotels
Are you there Jorge? You are a mine of information so I am hoping you can fill me in on some nice family hotels around 350 rs and below in Gujarat...Places also where other travellers won't give me evil looks for having 2 young ones. I have found this a problem sometimes in India - cool people not happy having kids around. I have also backpacked in Iran when my daughter was 3 and found the reverse - other travellers just lovely and friendly... Anyway I also have another question re Old Delhi - no one replies. I'm looking also for accomodation there...up to 500rs

desertlover,
I'm not sure if you are asking about me or another Jorge Gujarat is a huge state to give information about hotels..., please let me know the places you are most interested. In Delhi I always stay at Paharganj, so cannot give information about hotels in Old Delhi. I remember a post sent a month ago giving information about a hotel in this area. BTW, I normally travel alone and sometimes with my 24 years old son (since yesterday he is in south India), most probably the advices I can give about traveling with kids in India are not very useful. All the best Jorge |

desertlover,
In Patan don't go to Hotel Neerav(rec by LP) is terribly dirty and foul-smelling, I've stayed in a new hotel (Feb 2006)at the entrance of the town coming from Ahmedabad, the name is Navjivan. In Mandvi there is a nice guesthouse/hotel overlooking the estuary: Hotel Rukmavati email>: rukmavati@rediffmail.com phone: 02834220557 In Junagadh my reccomendation is for Hotel Relief at the city center with a good restaurant (vegetarian as always in Gujarat) too. If you intend to visit Champaner and other places at the eastern of Gujarat like Dabhoi, Chandod etc stay in Vadodara in Hotel Rahi Inn absolutely new (you know what it means in India)central at a walkable distance from the Railways Station. Opp. B.B.C. Tower, Sayajigunj. email:hotel_rahi_inn_@yahoo.co .in phone: 9925789070 In Bhuj Gangaram Hotel beside Aina Mahal is a nice place to stay overlooking the walls of the old city, their main problem is that they forget to clean the rooms but is very well located and with a very friendly staff. Thanks jorge..I am still trying to find something in the Old City (Delhi) without success so if you hear of anything...I'll be in Gujarat in June/July - do you think rooms will be chaeper as low season..I'm working out what to do about Kumbalgarh - where to stay and whether we can do a walk. I've been to Ranakhpur before so not interested in lingering there. If I leave Jodhpur in the morning could I spend enough time at Kumbalgarh if I aimed to spend the night in Udaipur (car/driver) from jodhpur?

Is quite usual to do in the same day Jodhpur - Kumbalgarh - Ranakpur - Udaipur. If you don't go to Ranakpur you can stay longer in Kumbalgarh. I think the distance is around 240 km. it means around 6-7 hours driving. Try to visit the temples of Nagda and Eklingi on your way to Udaipur (20 km before Udaipur)

What's the best way to get to Patan from Ahmedabad? I can't seem to find which is the closest railway station? Is it easy to make a bus booking? Can this be done as a day trip? Thanks for any tips.

Best and easiest way to do it would be to hop aboard a State transport bus from Ahmedabad.
There are trains from Ahmedabad to Mehsana and a Memu intercity from Mehsana to Patan ( not too sure of timings though) Also if you want to rough it out, then jeep / shared taxis also ply on the route... Can be done as a day trip - presuming that you want to see Ran Ki Vaav at Patan..?

In my opinion Patan is worth to stay at least one night, in my particular opinion much more interesting than Ahmedabad and the people are much more friendly. By bus is very easy to reach Patan from Ahmedabad.

I forgot to say than Modhera is very close to Patan and the Surya Temple is one of the most interesting monuments in India.
