Ghujurat
Hi - we are now in Pushkar and travelling onto Ghujurat - seems most people we have run into haven't been or are not going to Ghujurat. Our destination is Bhuj and Diu. I understand there has been some trouble there of late - does anyone have any pointers, tips or recommendations for us
Thanks |

as long as you are in Gujerat, you might want to visit Palitana and Junagadh. Palitana is incredible!

Hi Suzanne!
I'm not aware of any problems currently in Gujarat. There were communal troubles there a couple of years ago (Muslim - Hindu violence) or as the Indian newspapers would say "persons of a certain community attacked persons of another community", but Gujarat is trying to put all that in the past as it has been disasterous for financial investment in the state. As a foreign tourist I don't think you will have any problems travelling around Gujarat. The people there are friendly, welcoming and the whole area is very relaxed. You won't meet a lot of foreign tourists in Gujarat - I don't know whether you count this as a plus or a minus, but that's just the way it is! I would certainly recommend visiting Diu but perhaps not Diu town in the Xmas/New Year period when hotel prices rocket. On the other hand Resort Hoka at Nagoa Beach on the island might be a good place to spend the holiday period - Indiawise, on this forum runs this place and I have a feeling there may be a party going on! Bhuj is slightly depressing - you have to be prepared to see a city that looks like a bomb has hit it but the people there are great. As bijapuri says Palitana and Girnar (near Junagadh) temple mountains are amazing places. Other places worth visiting are Dwarka, Mandvi and the Little Rann of Kutch and Gir Forest National Park. If you would like any more detailed info on these places just PM me. |

suzanne, I was in Gujerat early this year with Alan_D from here with his wife Caroline. We had a marvellous time! I am pretty sure Alan sent Mike a long story of our trip around, it will be here somewhere. Make sure you visit Indiawise (from here also) in Diu at his hotel. You will love Gujerat, probably as undiscovered (by tourists) as you can get in India.

Thanks people for your info - its really helpful because no-one that we talk to knows anything about Gujarat. We have just got back from 3 days safari in Little Rann and had a great time although got extremely stared at in one of the villages waiting for the bus which was a bit unnerving. But had lots of fun with the villagers who dressed me up in a crazy skirt and sari - all very hilarious lots of photos taken which they were fascinated to see as we have digital camera. The children are great! Off to Bhuj tonight adn not sure whats in store for us there but we are determined to go see and then on the Junagadh Diu adn Palitana as recommmended by you guys - thanks for all the help. Don't know how to pm - not very computer minded- so if you have any other useful inof please post here and I will definitely get to it. Have to admit though too busy doing other things to get to the e-mail very regularly - but I guess thats the way it should be! Happy new year to you, Suzanne

We were in Gujarat a couple of weeks ago, and had a great time, with virtually no tourists. Glad to hear that you will be visiting Palitana - it is very interesting. A couple of tips:
1. Get there by 6.30am! That way you get to do most of the climbing before the heat. I think that official opening time is 6.30, but by then there were already lots of people on their way up. 2. When you get to the top, try to find one of the 'keepers' to take you up on to the roof. They'll want a bit of baksheesh, but it's worth it to get above everything and everyone, and to get some good photo shots. Enjoy yourselves! |

Hi suzanne!
It's good to hear you're enjoying Gujarat. If you're in Bhuj it's worth visiting the silver and gold bazaar in the middle of the old city. Mandvi, on the coast is only a short bus journey (about 50 k's) from Bhuj. It's a pleasant little town to stay in for a few days. I recommend the Rukmavati Guest House just on the town side of the bridge. If you are interested in buying fabrics there is a good selection of tie dye work in the town's bazaar. For food try Zorba the Buddha's thalis. |

Suzanne, you made myday! That's this site at its best:
Someone kinda wonders about a place, comes here to IM and gets some feedback, heads off in that direction and has a ball. The way it ought to be! |

Yes Bij, I agree. And you don't just get the basic information you were hoping for you get inundated with advice from all sorts of people, hints and tips from people who obviously know what they are talking about and have actually been there, sometimes many times. Many pats on the back for Mike not only for creating this site but also for his excellent management!

Hi Suzzane ,
don't forget to taste the curd at the gate on the hill top in Palitana (bring your own spoon if you want to be on the safe side) - it is very refreshing when you are feeling hot after the climb . I did it at 9 am and it was OK - it's Dec now so the heat is not a problem; don't forget to take mineral water...and enjoy Palitana Rossy
