Gujarat

Gujarat traveler,
please do not forget to go to Patan and see the wonderful STEPWELLS near is the SUN TEMPLE, and also in Patan is the famous Patolia Sari's factory, these sari's cost so many hundred's of Dollars. Then in Patan the marvelous white marble Jain temples, just so beautiful. All of these places are not on the tourist route, so you may be the only ones in the stepwells as my friend and I were.

I forgot to mention about the largest Banyan tree in the world, you have to take the boat across the Namanda river a little ways to this island from Baroda, and it has some 1000 roots. And they have a little temple on the Island as well. The tree really covers the whole Island.

i have posted quite a few gujarat photos in my gallery here, including some of the places gypsie.lotus has mentioned. gujarat does not seem to attract a lot of attention which may be why you haven't had a lot of replies.

do a search or check the gujarat forum, if my memory serves me well there is quite a bit of info on gujarat here.

enjoy the trip. when are you planning on going - it gets damn hot there.

Other places to visit in Gujarat are:

Baroda, Pavaghar, Dhakor, Somnath, Ambaji and Mt. Abu. The last 2 are very close to the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Pavaghar and Champaner are very close to each other.

Mt. Abu does not justify Rajasthan. But if you are going to travel in Gujarat, Mt. Abu is good place to go. Lot of people who go to Ambaji also go to Mt. Abu.

Gujarat is beautiful to see. The poeple are very nice and the food is one of the best. I might be little biased since I am Gujarati but man does the food taste good. Each big city has it's own food which they are known for.

Day for an excursion to Modhera. Constructed in 1026-27 A.D. during the reign of King Bhimdev I of Patan, the temple is dedicated to Surya or the Sun God. Modhera's sun temple is positioned in such a manner that at the equinoxes the rising sun strikes the images in the sanctuary. Overnight at hotel in Ahmedabad.
Day 14: Ahmedabad departure:
Today morning visit the Akshardham temple. The monument which is set in a 23-acre plot is built in pink sandstone. It is 108 feet tall and 6000 tones of stone has gone into its making. A point worth noting is that this modern monument to Hinduism was built as per the injunctions of Vastu Shastra. Not a bit of steel has been used. Can anyone name (I forget)a wild life sanctuary near Somnath? I went there but unfortunately it was closed for Monday. It would be a nice day trip along with Somnath temple and nice horse ride on the beach.

... and yes, do not miss the Gujarati style food of Khichdi, Bajari bread, etc.
