Lightbulb Gujarat - out of the public ( read heavy tourist flow ) places

Hi All,

Hope to see this thread showing what all is hidden in Gujarat. Let's list out the locations in Gujarat, which you thought were very beautiful AND are still unexplored to a large extent.

Like the Jungle area of Jambughoda ( approx 80kms from Baroda ) which are totally not know to the regular tourist, but is actually just beautiful....

Let's get started people..

siddphur, a vohra town about 150km nw ahmedabad. the most amazing blend of hindu, muslim and european architecture. a friend travelling with me said that it reminded her of prague.

i have a few photos in my gallery here at indiamike http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s.../3/ppuser/6894

There are many, many interesting and off beaten places in Gujarat. Thanks for the information about Jambughoda area.

Not far from Jambughoda you can visit Champaner and Pavagarh (50 km northeast of Baroda) Champaner is since 2004 World Heritage Site.

South of Baroda you can also visit Dabhoi (30 km), Chandod, Sankheda and Rajpipla (65 km). Really interesting places, especially the walled city of Dabhoi.

The region of Saurashtra is full of sites like Lothal, Bhavnagar, Palitana, Diu, Gondal, Veraval, Junagadh, Dwarka and Wankaner.

Kutch region is one of the most different and impressive regions in India with places like Bhuj, Mandvi, Mundra and the Banni area from Bhuj to Khavda the gate of The Rann Of Kutch.

Patan is probably my favourite place in Gujarat and not far from Patan the Sun Temple of Modhera is a must.

jorge, what did you find so interesting in patan? i was only there for a few hours to visit the double ikat weaving at patolas so i didn't see a lot, but i did find the old city wall quite beautiful. (i'm a nerd, i like built things...)

i've posted quite few photos of the sun temple in my gallery here at indiamike, and i think you have quite a few gujarat photos here too?

iwanttogoback,

After leaving Ahmedabad, Patan was a treasure for me.The town has a great character and a tribal ambiance in the street that i like, and everybody was really kind with me,just the opposite of Ahmedabad. On the other hand quite a lot of nice jain and hindu temples, busy bazaars, the stepped wells etc..

Probably my pictures of Patan are in my son's gallery : jorge jr (no space at this moment in my account). About Modhera I suposse you loved the temple.

Im looking into driving between Admedabad and Mt. Abu, to visit, some of the places (including the Sun Temple and Patan) along the way. Do you think this could be done in a day? Any comments on what the countryside is like in this area of Gujarat?

The distance is around 270km and you know how long it takes by road. In any case you can do it in a day trip providing to wake up early.

If you are passing by my home town Uttarsanda dont forget to get some dilicious Papads (Papodoms) and Matthias - best in whole of india! (dont go for full mari-Black Pepper unless you can take it)
Uttarsanda, approx. halfway between baroda(Vadodara) and Amdavad (Ahemdabad). This is where Shriji Icecream also originated.

I second you for the Papads! They are very good and are very known in Gujarat. I have a friend from uttarsanda too. What a small world and small IndiaMike. I am originally from Baroda :-)

Thumbs up uttarsanda

last month i was nearby uttarsanda in a very small hamlet but nobody told me about the papads

Never mind, next time i'll have double the portion

and i don't mind the "full pepper" ones

I was staying at Nadiad and travelling to outlying villages. The mathias of Nadiad are famous, are they too from uttarsanda??

Hi Jenk,

You can do Ahmd to Abu in a day, should not be a problem - if you start early.

The highway from Ahmd to Palanpur ( near to the Rajasthan border ) is fantastic.

You can visit Sun temple at Modhera and patan enroute - at Patan, visit some Patola shops ( they're a type of saree - very beautiful & very costly too ) and also the Rani ki vaav ( which is absolutely beautiful...

If you are coming back from Abu to Ahmd - you can also plan visiting the Ambaji temple.

Many thanks!
would it be a good thing to visit Ahmedabad during Navatri?
what would be going on that we could see or participate it?

Navratri

Hi,

Navratri anywhere in Gujarat is absolutely fantastic...!!

it's touted as the Longest and Largest Dance festival in the world.. you cannot afford to miss it if you are here during that time.. and the best part is participation is voluntary for everybody....

Hi,

I visited Patan day before yesterday... the Rani Ki Vav there is absolutely amazing.... i dont think mere words can express it's beauty enough... the architectural beauty is well.. for loss of a better word.. breathtaking....

Rann of Kutch is a all time personal favourite...
