Go to Dwarka

I’ve just got back from two months in Gujarat . One of the highlights of my stay was spending some time in Dwarka . This town is religiously significant for Hindus and has lots to offer for overseas tourists . The beach may not be fantastic but the temples form a backdrop and look amazing , its great to watch the Indian tourists wandering around and going for camel rides with the Arabian sea as a backdrop . Everyday there are numerous flag ceremonies parading through the streets, complete with ersatz bands of drummers and key board players . Its hard , well almost impossible not to get caught up in the fervour . Like me you are sure to be invited to join in the rituals that wind their way through Dwarka’s narrow streets leading to the Sri Dwarkadhish Temple. I have been to few places in India where there is so much dancing in the morning, the are so many fireworks and colourful smoke bombs , and the friendliness of the locals is next to none …

Go there ….they do excellent lassi’s to ….

I was there for a day in Dec. 2004 and rushed through the town. It was first time for me being there eventhough I was born in Gujarat. I wish I had more times to spend there.
Did you visit Bet Dwarka and Somnath Temple? They both also have very significant religious impact on all hindus. Please post some pictures if you can.
It's sad that not many people visit Gujarat. Gujarat Govt. also has not done enough to build infrastuce to attract tourism either.

Dwarka

No i didnt get to Bet Dwarka , but did go to Somnath , but that is quite a way down the coast next to Veraval.

Not so far away from Dwarka is Junagadh , an interesting town with great fort (i think Junagadh means Old Fort) . Few foreign tourists and the famous Girnar Hill. I was ill prepared for the 10, 000 step climb and it took quite a few days for my legs to recover from the step aerobics needed to climb to the top.

this city sounds fascinating. I read a few things about it online. I'm in the midst of planning an extensive trip, and Gujarat is one of the places on my short list.

Ashwin: Yes...Dwarka and Somnath are on coastline and will take you about seven hours. I'm visiting Somnath next month. Dwarka is must if you've not visited before. I would visit Dwarka anyday if I've a day to spare.

I too went to Dwarka many moons ago and remember it as a nice town. Only the priests at the temple would hassle you for this ceremony and that a little.
