From Udaipur to Diu with Car and Driver

My husband and I (50+) will be ending our Rajasthan trip in Udaipur and would like to go to Diu.

We are not into overnight trains/busses or long drives, but there must be a way from Udaipur to Diu with a car and driver stopping over a couple of nights on the way.

We have six nights spare (2 for travelling) and were hoping to spend 4 nights in Diu and then fly to Mumbai.

Can anyone recommend an itinery please? A Mt Abu stop is not necessary as we are going to Ranakpur.

Many thanks

I believe the best options are Ahemadabad and Bhavnagar. Udaipur - Ahemadabad takes about 4-5 hrs in a taxi. You could spend a pleasant evening at this lovely ehtnic resort
. The food is great but pure vegitarian.

I think the next stop could be at Bhavnagar - exactly halfway between Ahemadabad and Diu. I have no idea about the place though. i remembered a had bookmarked a 'driving' directions link for Diu- might be helpful to you.

Another useful map was this

To add to rajeev's reply, if you get to Ahmedabad at a reasonable time, you could have a look at Gandhi's Ashram (Sabarmati Ashram), it's a very relaxing way to spend a couple of hours.

A good place to visit on the way from Ahmedabad to Diu would be Palitana near Bhavnagar, it's about 3/5ths of the way there, so a good place for a break.

Thanks heaps Rajeev and Steven Ber, it was exactly the information I was looking for. And the suggestion to stay at Rajwadu looks good. Also thanks for the map reference. Can't say thank you enough as this will round off our trip nicely and it's all doable within our travel constraints.
Cheers.

Noflylist: Sorry, I do not know how far is Vapi from Ahemadabad. About, Rajwadu, It has pavilions made for different performances, like folk dances, puppet shows, magic shows, juglars, pottery makers etc, and there are regular performances for all these each evening.

Gohome: I am not sure if Rajwadu offers an option for an overnight stay. Please do check with them.

I've been in this area last month of March. I would recommend to stay in Patan (the old capital of the kingdom) is the perfect place for the traveler "off the beaten trails" (I'm on my 50s almost 60s)from Patan you can visit the Sun Temple at Modhera a real gem in the middle of nowhere. I don't like Hmedabad but can recommend the Hotel "The House of Mangaldas Girdhardas" they have a web page:
http://www.houseofmg.com

From Ahmedabad go to Palitana, the climb is a little hard but worth the effort.

In Diu I recommend Hotel Samrat in the middle of the old town. Very good price/quality value for the money.

All the best

Jorge

nofly vapi is about 400 km/248 miles from Ahemdavad and lots of option to get there trains/bus/car. Daman is about 10 km from Vapi railway station.

Looks like you have most of the information you need, but I would give you a word of advice if you are flying to Mumbai from Diu...book the Diu-Mumbai flight as early as you can. My husband and I looked into the airfares and they were booked out for two weeks around the date we wanted to fly. So we had to take the overnight sleeper train to Mumbai (which wasn't a drama for us, but as sleeper trains aren't your thing...).

About Mt Abu, the Delwada temples are amazing, but Mt Abu's a lovely place to visit regardless. It's a place where Indians go for weekends so it has a lovely holiday resort vibe. It was JUST THE THING (yes, I'm nearly shouting ) after two weeks in Rajasthan :] Also there is lots of shopping priced for the Indian market. I had three Punjabi suits made up in 24 hours. Well worth a trip. It's 5ish hours from Udaipur and about 4 hours from Ranakpur (Udaipur/Ranakpur/Mt Abu form a rough square: Udaipur in the southeast, Ranakpur in the northeast, and Mt Abu in the southwest)

Thanks Anarkali for your input. Yes I would love to go to Mt Abu, however we only have 6 days spare (2 travelling), 4 for Diu. I presume the quickest way to Diu from Udaipur is via Ahemadabad and Bhavnagar. Also my husband is interested in modern Gujrat art and is keen to visit the gallery in Ahemadabad. Thanks for your tip on booking flights, I am intending to do this in early April after we finalise our tour booking.
