Dwarka, somnath, diu, junagadh, mt. abu etc.

Hi friends,
I have just joined this big family of travellers. And I think that I would get answer to my queries here.

My parents want to visit the holy Dwarka and Somnath. Further they have heard that Diu is also worth watching. Then they would like to go to Junagadh. From Junagadh they want to board some train to Mt. Abu. Then a trip to Udaipur and Chittaurgarh and ultimately back home in Delhi.

Can anybody suggest how to plan it. As far as I know, planning a trip to Dwarka and Somnath is easy, but from there onwards, how ?

Specifically
1. From Somnath ,is there any direct bus or train to Diu?
2. And where to stay in Diu.
3. Is any daily sightseeing tour available in diu?
4. from diu, how to go to junagadh and reach there before it gets dark.
5. How to do sightseeing in Junagadh?
6. Where to stay in Junagadh?
7. From junagadh ,is there any direct train to Abu Road ( for mt. abu)

I have looked in my old Lonely Planet Guide and don't find any of the things you ask about. No direct trains where you want trains, though it's possible that there are buses which are not listed (this book is 5 years old and things change).

The Girnar Express goes from Junagadh to Ahmedabad, and there you can get a train to Abu Road.

There's a tourist office in Diu that should be able to help you set up a tour, but I don't see a mention of a regularly-scheduled tour of the area.

I hope you'll tell us about your visit to Gujurat when you return; not so many people go there -- which is why I'm planning on it for my next visit to India!

Thanks for your reply. In fact since last posting of the message I have changed my plan.

Actually I am planning this trip for my parents. So I had to be more precise and practical in my approach. I dropped Diu from their itiniary. Now the new plan is like below:

1. Board Uttaranchal express from Ghaziabad (near Delhi) to Dwarka.
2. Do puja and other sightseeing there. (They have been to three other hindu-dhams in India namely, badrinath,rameshwaram,and jagganath puri. Dwarka is the fourth dham, so this trip carries a religious significance for them)

3. From Dwarka go to somnath via bus. 5 hours journey
4. Stay in Somnath and visit the place
5. From Veraval ( 7 kms from Somnath) catch a train to Junagadh.
6. See fort ,zoo,museum,temples, ashokan edict etc. in Junagadh
7. From Junagadh go to Rajkot and from Rajkot catch a train to Abu Road, railway station for Mt. ABU

8. mT. ABU, RANAKPUR,UDAIPUR, NATHDWARA,HALDIGHATI,EKLINGI,C HITTAURGARH ETC..

They are leaving on 18th and would return on 2nd Dec. so lets see how it takes place

Wow, a train from Delhi that goes to Dwarka? That is truly wonderful.

When I was last there, Dwarka was a sweet little town with three streets; I imagine it's grown a bit but it should be very comfortable for your parents.

I've never been to Badrinath; that would be MY 4th dham!

Please tell us about the trip in December, when they have returned.

badrinath is really a very calm place.I visited it in august 2004.i met there a person called "BARFANI BABA" about whom it is said that he is the only person to stay back in Badrinath in winter months. I happened to visit his hut at the mountain top.I could do so just because he came down the valley that day which happens very rarely. That was a superb experience.

anyway, you should definitely visit that place.

I am looking eagerly for a comfortable and succesfull trip of my parents. shall get back to you later.

The train referenced by Chinapeak starts at Dehradun and only runs on Sundays (leaves Dehradun early am). For trains to Dwarka from other locations I have attached a link to a Dwarka hotel website. (I am not endorsing the hotel and I know nothing about it and have never stayed there). There are trains to Dwarka starting from Guwahati, Varanasi, Puri, Gorakhpur, Erankulam, Mumbai, and some cities in Gujarat (and also from Jammu Tawi which is not on the list and goes through Delhi - this may be a special).

Ah, but that hotel is quite elegant ... maybe Dwarka has changed a lot since I was last there.
