Hm, sorry, I don't quite remember.
You'll want to get on to Una, which is its mainland connection point, Diu is just a short ride from there (there's a bridge). Note you should aim to arrive here by daylight or in the early evening at the latest; somewhere at night, buses to Diu stop running, and after that the rickshaw drivers will demand exorbitant prices, knowing you have no choice. (Or that's how it used to be anyway.) In that case, perhaps better to spend the night in Una; which isn't exactly a place to rave about though. You'll probably get from Ahmedabad to Una by (a combination of?) train or bus (well, obviously, wouldn't you ), I really don't remember. I think you can just ask around for it upon landing in A'bad -- or perhaps another member may be in here to give you the lowdown, of course It can't be very far, maybe several hours, but that too I don't recall -- I was ill along the way (heavy sunburn I'd acquired in Diu, on the leg of all things, but made me really feverish and generally unwell -- beware of them unshaded but windy and hence seemingly "cool" beaches!), and beset by some bad news I'd just received to boot.Depending on where you're coming from, you might find private bus companies plying straight to Diu btw -- there exist such to Mumbai for instance, I think and am pretty sure. You may well find such from A'bad, too. The way I recall the bus and train stations, as well as a gazillion travel agents, are all close to one another here, making it easy to enquire. This is an awfully hectic area and those travel agents are really pushy, but, well, at least they'll get you a ride if they can.

private buses from ahmedabad to diu run daily at night. you will leave by around 10 pm and will reach diu by about 8 in morning or earlier. they have sleeper coaches too in wich there are beds instead of usual seats

As wind-chariot says, there are overnight private buses from A'bad to Diu. Mostly trouble free, but ours arrived an hour or so later than scheduled due to an unscheduled (and unspecified - but I was too snoozy to notice) bus maintenance issue :]
