Diu
Does anyone know anything about Diu, we are looking for a quiet place to relax for a few days. Is this the place? Also, is there anywhere in that area where I can catch a boat to Mumbai?
Thanx |

Diu is an excellent place to relax for a few days or even longer!
No, there is no boat service between Diu and Mumbai but there is an air service. I would recommend Resort Hoka beside Diu Airport and Nagoa Beach. We stayed there late last year. Great place and very welcoming host ( indiawise on this forum). See my post in the New hotels section. Excellent food and a great music collection but alas no TV! I think the monsoon will me arriving any day now in Diu, so this needs to be considered, also, the train is not running at the moment between Ahmedabad and Veraval because of gauge conversion, an 11 hour bus from Ahmedabad to Diu is the only option.

'to chip in or not to chip in' is the question. This comes oft to ma mind whilst browsing this site! Theres a heady number of seasoned and wise india travellers who seem to have all the information and more. But still here hear ma 2 cents...Alan D is as usual spot on when he describes diu as an excellent place to chill out. I find it hard to say more since its my hotel he's recommending! But apart from the fact that thats true the temperature is at present 25 degres celsius. it usually starts raining proper end june in diu. unless they are early. The rains unlike the daman mumbai goa kerala stretch are not heavy, except for a couple of bouts. Diu technically could be called a desert in terms of the amount of mm of rainfall it gets annually. however you have to hope your luck is in with the weather as elsewhere at this point of time. i personally think that diu is about the only beach destination where one can swim at this time of the year.
Yes as steven ber says there is no boat available whatso ever in these parts. Having been in the fishing buisiness for a period myself i think that getting a boat on hire would not be economical apart from the hassles with the port and customs authorities who are quite strait jacketed mentally too! Its possible to do it quietly but i don't think that its worth the trouble. I don't know about Marve and manori, but the rest of the beaches between surat and mumbai aren't what i would recommend, at least in the gujarat section. Daman take it from my heart PLEASE AVOID unless its stinking beaches and dirty mercury laden sands (awash with the effluent rivers of closeby industrial vapi/valsad etc) and water that you don't mind. i have been there quite often on work as its the headquarters for diu, though its 600km away. Diu is a different ball game and i would recommend it if you had the time and were on this side of the continent. feel free to ask for details. steven is right about the trains etc. the easiest way to diu is to fly about 100$ one way to mumbai. |
