Diu - recent experiences wanted

Mrs G and I are thinking of taking a trip to Diu Island. Searches here have brought up a little information but we want a good overview.

Particularly interested in the state of the beaches and whether the exotic, beautiful but shy Mrs G will feel comfortable swimming on any of the beaches.

Also timing - when does the monsoon arrive?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dr G,
I was in Diu five years ago - so my experince there is far from recent. The beaches were quiet and beautiful. There were hardly any tourists-- nothing like Goa or Kovallam. Mrs G can have a quiet time with few peering eyes. I would say go..
and if you do-- give us an update on the scene now.

Well, since you're from Australia, I doubt you'll find the beaches anything special. However, Diu has a certain charm about it, it's very different to the rest of India. Very relaxed, no traffic, just rent a moped and explore the island. There's an interesting little fishing village at the far end of the island from Diu town, and lots of countryside (and a wide highway) in between.

As for beaches, Nagoa is the most popular, but full of Indians down from alcohol-free Gujarat just to whet their whistles, and many females don't like the atmosphere.

Sunset point is a popular spot for travellers, it's close to the town.

My favourite beach was Gomptimata, almost at the other end of the island, past Nagoa, big waves and strong currents though, but completely deserted. It's a very big beach.

Some people find Diu boring, others stay for weeks, and love it.

Hope that helps.

I was thinking of replying, but my reply would be almost word for word the same as Conor's reply.

You can also rent pushbikes, and you don't need to be fit to cycle to the other end of the Island.

The little caves close to Diu town are interesting for an hour.

Stayed in February 2006 four days in Diu. I liked the place and beaches but for me was a little boring as I was traveling alone. I can recommend Hotel Samrat in Diu Town, probably the best option on town.

Nagoa beach is the best in the island and normally was not crowded. The Resort Hoka looks nice and belongs to an Indiamike member if I remember well. Ghogla is an interesting fishing village in front of Diu Town.

I would agree with Jorge Reverter on the Hoka Resort as the best bet! If you plan to go now, be ready to get roasted! Summers are pretty tough, deserted and lonely. The best time to visit Diu is in the winter months when the days are breezy and the nights are cool. Besides, since it is the off-season in May, you may find it boring if you are used to some company. But yes, if you are looking at total privacy...hit the road!

the main problem with Diu is that unless you fly, it's a grind to get there. Recommend working in the flight from Mumbai on one end or the other of your route.
There is an overnite train from ahmedabad to the bearest railhead, about 3 hrs away by car.

That's a good point. I get the feeling lots of people stay longer than they plan, simply because they can't face the journey out of the there. The local government buses are in an awful state, as are the roads in that area. Still, you get to see some nice little villages along the way.......

I stayed in Diu two weeks in november 2005 and can agree that Hotel Samrat is the best value in town. Nagoa is far from town, has few overpriced resorts and because of every weekend influx of inebriated Gujaratis is hardly the best beach. The town is much more interesting for example Barbeque parties in Sao Tome Retiro.
