Diu from Mumbai

Ok, I know that these types of questions have been asked a billion time sbut I just want opinions, pls!

I arrive in Mumbai late tonight and am planning on staying there one more night. I am currently in KL and I am starting to get tired of cities, I want relaxation before I take on the rest on India! (I'll be in India for three months) I have read some good things about Diu (I am looking at exploring the north of India for this trip) I looked into airfares which are very expensive. Is it worth catching a plane for the sake of getting out of major cities fast OR should I just take it easy and catch a train to Ahmedabad then down to Diu? I'm a lone female if that makes a difference.

Cheers

Hello sageearth and welcome to indiamike.com

The plane to Diu is expensive, and the train is probibly the best way to get to know India, though the beaches of Diu are going to be dissapointing compared with Malaysian beaches.

A good way to avoid Ahmedabad is the following train.

Train 2971 departs Bandra Terminus (Mumbai) daily at 21:25 and gets to Sihor Gujarat station at 10:57

2 tier air con = Rs 1153
3 tier air con = Rs 820
Sleeper Class = Rs 311 (not air con)

Availability for 28/2/2007

2A = 8
3A = RAC
SL = RAC

RAC = reserved against cancellation, your guarenteed a seat, but if there are last minute cancellations or if people don't turn up for the train, you get a berth. (most times you get a berth)

Sihor is about 22 Kms from Palitana.

You should be able to relax in Palitana.

There are direct buses from Palitana to Diu, the journey time should be 6 hours.

Another choice is to fly to Bhavnagar and take bus from there. In past I have noticed that fares to Bhavnagar are cheaper than those to Diu. Air Deccan and Jet Airways fly to Bhabnagar from Mumbai.
