I met a couple of members from Indiamike.com a couple of years ago, that made a crowd of 3, there are often crowds of friendly Gujarati's, but not a lot of tourists.
The line from Ahmedabad to Veraval is closed at the moment for gauge conversion, so crowds of tourists are unlikely, but that’s the beauty of Diu.

I've never been there for Xmas but I've been there both before and after the Xmas/New Year period.
Xmas - New Year is one of the busiest times of the year, hotel prices rocket and the town fills up with Indian visitors, many of them determined to drink themselves silly - availability of cheap booze being the main attraction. Outside of this period Diu returns to being a sleepy small town. I'm not sure what you mean by "crowd". People in general or foreign tourists? If you mean foreign tourists, yes there will be some scattered around. If this sounds like your scene, then fine. If you want a quieter option then I would recommend the Nagoa Beach area and Resort Hoka in particular, where we stayed. Last edited by Alan D : Nov 19th, 2003 at 16:49. |

New years and christmas are busy, but thats just for a few days. New years is when diu fills up with billions of 'The good, bad and the ugly', trying to have a blast and so on, as its elsewhere. The only difference is that its usually young indian stags! So apart from, say 29th dec to 1st jan u'll find diu just the quiet place it usually is. Yes, during the period 20th dec to about end march its the tourist 'season' and u'll find more western tourists and its busier than normal in terms of the western tourist component. But if u r looking for a big crowd and the party scene than Goa is a better deal. Diu...well is a different scene and has its own charm. You can party if u like, but its like you'll have to make it happen!! Or u could just take it easy and feel smug...thats easy in diu....
The time not to be in diu is during diwali and Holi festivals. These days are busiest in the year, prices thro the roof and the crowd so much that its no fun... |

Thanks for the information.
I am just looking for a relaxed place to celebrate chrismas, not the party scene, but I would like to meet some other nice people, as I am traveling alone. Kerala(which would be my first choice) is inconvenient at that time, as I will be in rajastan/gujarat. Any place that you guys recommend in the region? |

Xmas is pretty non-eventful in India and worse if your traveling alone.
I have spent a few Xmas's in Diu and a few years ago it was something to write home about and there where some great moments. The last one was non-eventful and just me and the boys drinking all night. The very knowledgeable Indiawise can correct me if I am wrong, but there is usually just a small mass at the church for Xmas. There used to be a dance party afterwards but I am pretty sure they have ended that now. Didn't happen the last Xmas I was there. The New Years depends on if the Israelis crowd has decided that it's a cool spot for a party or not. But I totally agree with Indiawise when he says "You can party if u like, but its like you'll have to make it happen!". Is it good or bad, well depends on how you look at it. However spending Christmas eve swimming under the stars in the Arabian Sea is still pretty sweet. Personally Tim, Here's my advise. Find a nice girl who is traveling alone and share Christmas with with her. Go to Udaipur and get in on the Xmas dinner at either the Lake Palace or the City Palace. Hey it's a big splurge but it's really nice and a good way to impress a girl. (note--you will have to book in advance for a table though) |

Yes they still do have the xmas mass at the church, but its a long drawn affair. YYAAAAWWWN. As the mass proceeds, u'll be entertained with scenes of honest catholic husbands getting progressively drunk, kids turning cranky to the point of no-return, young mothers hissing at their children and husbands, and a priest who just won't give up and who'll have his day and cake and eat it a and take some home too... But its worth it somehow..i dunno why. The dances don't happen anymore as the mass goes well past midnight. Quite a few tourists take a break from their party, attend a bit of mass and then carry on.
Indiamike the israelis have their parties, and this year seems to be a return or should i say advent of the 'Full-moon' israeli arranged partyi in Diu too. They had one on the 8th nov. 2003. But thats a separate scene and one kinda party where my types just 'Freeze' with boredom. Not exagerating but the best xmas eve/new years party in diu is usually at the Resort hoka. Again it depends on what the crowd is like this year and then maybe we'll do it..i mean have a good get-together, dinner and dance and!!!! After a couple of years tourism seems to be up in diu, but lets see how it goes. As regards finding a nice girl...hmmm..Hey...Indiamike I'm single too, maybe u could have a separate section s'thing like lonelytravellers section.....Hey what a brlliant idea! |
