Diu and Ice Cream
Well I have been reading through the new Lonely Planet India (yes I acutally own it---for the maps
) and they blew it again. They failed to give a write up on the best Ice Cream place on the island. There is a little family owned shop that has the best ice cream probally in India, it's called Sri Ram Vijay Ice Cream. Any heading to Diu, I give this place "a big thumbs up" it has some serious homemade strawberry ice cream. Last time I went there I wrote this wacky article for culture connect about it. You can read the article here http://cultureconnect.com/content/tr...diamike1-1.htm As you can tell by the article, I really really like this place. Mike |

Ram Vijay
Since I have been in Diu now for three weeks I must say Ram Vijay ice cream has not changed a bit and the ice cream is just the best.
One of the owners gave me a tour of the ice cream factory and it was like being a little boy in....well...an ice cream factory. Many tourists always wonder about ice cream and is it safe. Ram Vijay's factory is totally spotless and the standards they use is incredible. I will say it again, if your coming to Diu, this should be your first stop. Get a big Vanilla shake and go for it...trust me on this one. Mike |

A warning for people not staying long in diu, DON'T go to Sri Ram Vijay.
If you hav'nt time to try all there ice creams, fruit juces and cream soda's dont go, you will be left wondering. It is to be found on the south west side of the square accross from the 2 barber shops. Highly reccomended. enjoy......................... .............................. ..... actually this is a good subject. while i couldn't give a toss about pizzas, chips, macdonalds etc - everyone loves ice cream. obviously Vijay's do the best ice cream in india, but has anyonye got any also rans? what about indiawide companies? any flavour recommendations? my own favourite would have to be a really nice pista kulfi- but i cant recommend any places/brands. |

hi archits
please excuse my memory but i remember amul, & at least 1 other brand being fairly widely available. I also remember, after serious experimentation that 1 was much better quality (in the pista kulfi stakes) than the others. but i can't remember which!!!!!
any personal preference? |

ice creams
Amul and Vadilal are my personal favorites. The other brand you refer to which used to be a byword was Kwality. This company was taken over by Hindustan Lever and they brought in a new brand called Walls.
Since people like Kwality they now call it Kwality walls. since the managers of HLL thought that Indians would flip for foreign brands they brought in Walls. In matters of cuisine all American companies have failed barring the coca cola and pepsi. Thus Walls is a failure. There are many local brands in each region. In the South Arun Ice cream in tamil nadu is quite popular. maybe others can contribute here too. |

No trains are running between ahmedabad and veraval because of track gauge conversion, this will probibly be the case till at least 2005, when i get more info i will post it.
It takes 11 hours by bus from Ahmedabad to Diu.click here for details. There is a Daily (except Saturday) flight from Mumbai to Diu, it departs at 10:45 and gets to Diu at 11:45, and costs US$100 single, the service is operated by Jet Airways. The return flight (not Saturday) departs Diu at 12:15 and gets to Mumbai at 14:50 (Via Porbander) US$100 single.

Diu is in the LP, footprints and rough guide. I'll post a detail on the ways to get to diu. Most tourists i meet have had a tough time getting here.

Not just ice creams Diu offers many other things, great food & affordable beers & what it doesn't offer is the madness of Goa except on week ends when hordes descend from Ahmedabad with the sole purpose of getting sozzled.
