Bringing liquor at Ahmedabad airport
Hi,
I am a resident of Ahmedabad and will be travelling to USA for a month. I would be landing in India at Mumbai airport, and from there I would be catching a domestic flight to Ahmedabad. Question is - if i bring upto 2 litres of liquor from US, it will be through the Customs in Mumbai. But can i bring it to Ahmedabad? Will there be any issues? |

Yes ! You can't bring Alcohal into Gujarat without a permit.
The security scanning will be at Mumbai and not at Ahmedabad, hence you might not get caught...... But there is risk...........

Domestic airlines don't permit carrying liquor bottles as hand baggage. This would need to be packed in your check-in baggage.
Please bear in mind the local prohibition laws. It will be at your own risk. |

I have brought liquor at least 20 times to Ahmedabad (strickly for personal consumption). I have never been caught. But then I don't ever get stopped by even traffic police for seat belt or helmet - so it can be purely luck!
If you are coming directly from an international flight, you can keep it in hand baggage. But if you are coming via connecting domestic flight then as Ashok has mentioned, you need to put the bottles in your check-in baggage before boarding. The tricky part is that no one inside the airport will stop you. But if you are caught outside airport (or on your way to home), then you could be in trouble. At the same time, if you have been living in Ahmedabad, you should know how to get around that part. ![]() |

I have brought liquor into the Ahmedabad domestic airport many times. Sometimes as much as 16 bottles of wine also for personal consumption, never had an issue. I do remember once bringing in 6 bottles from Singapore into the International terminal and had to pay duties on it----never was it taken away. ALways checked the bags never hand carry. I have heard rumor of expat families that make regular "liquor runs" to Bombay. Don't think it is a big problem--- just read about the hootch that killed many people---that is illegal also.

A couple of years back I flew into Ahmedabad with 2 bottles of whisky - no problems. The security and customs people went through all my bags and saw that I had a couple of bottles.
I think if you are a westerner then there is usually no problem. As far as the 'liquor is banned in Gujarat' - that is something of a joke. So many people have alcohol (in Ahmedabad at least), or access to alcohol that makes the whole prohibition thing quite ludicrous. It is sad that so many people died in the 'hooch tragedy', but as long as the bootleggers pay up the 'hafta' then these kinds of incidents will continue. |

But still our members should not advocate breaking the law - any law. A few years ago the state of Haryana tried enforcing total prohibition, and failed miserably. |

This kind of laws are absolutely ridiculous because you can buy liquor legally under certain conditions in Gujarat. I've been in Gujarat several times (by train or bus) and have always carried with me a bottle or whisky or other liquors. I reccomend to do like that even if is banned..... ridiculous.

I am Indian 32 years old - born and brought up in Ahmedabad.. had spent about 8 years in US and have travelled many parts of India as well as world. I have settled back in Ahmedabad now and been a social drinker since age of 18.
Overall, I like Liquor prohibition in Gujarat. People who have good connections (most Gujaratis have those), can get any brand liquor whenever they want at a little premium price. Foreigners and people from outside Gujarat can get liquor permit (easily), and can buy liquor officially. Due to liquor prohibition law, there are no bars. Everyrone consumes liquor inside their homes with a fear of not getting caught. So you don't see many drunks or drink and drive accidents in Gujarat. For ahmedabad, one can easily say that a single woman can go out in middle of night without any fear. I miss bar hoping, wine tasting, having beer while watching baseball game either in stadium or on big screen TV in pub. But in my eyes it's a small price to pay for bigger cause SAFETY. If liquor prohibition is taken away, things won't be same. My 2 cents...! |

It is up to the individual who reads the posts here as responsible adults to make up their own minds about the content and points made therein. Is this not a (relatively) democratic forum where members are free to post their own 'Indian' experiences? On a quick search there is at LEAST one other topic (which I shall not name for 'fear' of being labelled a law-breaking advocate - ha ha) on this forum which clearly has posts discussing the breaking of another law, openly. |

I totally agree with you ianscott. But in my short time 20 months I have read in the papers alot about teenage drinking and driving. Hate this. Prohibition is not fool proof. But that is true everywhere.

Bad news about alcohol comsumption/prohibition. It seems that is probably better to have bars....or may be you prefer things like this:
Have a look at this information coming directly from Gujarat: "India toxic alcohol tops 100" http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8144023 And "cin cin" to the prohibition's lovers Jorge |

Is it really banned in Gujarat?. Yee Hah, I am there.
I never understood the obsession with having a drink. It's actually factored into people's travel plans!!!
