bhuj - permit to see tribal villages
I am going to Bhuj in 2 weeks time for a very short period of time. Arriving on Saturday afternoon I would like to arrange the permit to visit some tribal villages the next day. There are some mixed messages related to opening times on Saturdays of The Tourist Office, where I could get a permit. Can somebody help me to find the correct information, please?!

Hi,
We were in march in Bhuj and got the permits from the registration office that was situated in the police station. This was on a Monday and it was then open until five o'clck. I have no idea for the opening times on Saturday. We just had to fill in a form and add some copies of our pasport and visum to it. Then we had to wait for another hour before someone came with the authority to sign. The permits are free. |

Hi. You could get in touch with Judy Frater of Kalaraksha who is active with the tribal villages - promoting their handicrafts and embroidery. Her website is: www.kalaraksha.org and she is based in Sumrasar Village which is about an hours drive north of Bhuj. She even has accomodation available at the place, in the middle of the village. The permits are given in the Collectorate, bring your passport. It takes no more than 15 minutes.

Currently I am waiting for reply from another lodge in a village if they can organise the permit/ tour/accomodation. If not I will contact Judy. Thanks Nattacia |

Judy Frater's place
I just found her website and was very intrigued. I will be in Gujarat with my Gujarati in-laws in December and have always wanted to travel out to Kutch. I love textiles and textile design. How difficult was this place to reach from Ahmedabad. Would it be safe to take kids all the way out there? It seems very rustic.

Bhuj and The Kutchh in general is one of te safest places in India. You van visit the tribal villages easily, better with a car with driver. On the coastside the beach and town of Mandvi is great as wel as Mundra not far away from Mandvi.
