Apartment Rentals

Hey Guys,

So I have just moved to Ahmedabad from Mumbai-NYC and will be working here for the next year or so. I am currently living in my company guest house and simultaneously looking for apartments to rent. Thinking of a budget of Rs. 3500-4000 max. Could you guys recommend any sites I could look at, brokers you have interacted with and consider good? My firm is in Usmanpura and am hoping to stay in the vicinity.

I would also really appreciate any recommendations on any
- driving schools, obtaining a license and buying second hand scooter/bikes
- good, affordable cell phone network.
- bank with good service and ATM network in Ahmedabad.

Also is there a travel group or expat community/meetup of sorts? Starting from scratch in a new city and would love to meet with people.

hi...

well....you can go through a broker (but have a recommendation of someone u know...like a office colleague)...remember a broker will intially show you the lesser preferred ones..insist with him to show you the best....also try some of this paying guests in that area..some offer a flat on top of their residences and u can get a good deal with the budget you quoted...i have a flat in gandhinagar..but that will be too far for u...

all the best..ajay...

The Indian version of the "good old boy" network seems to be much in play here. Once you know a few people, who know a few people, etc things get much easier. I got my flat through someone at my NGO that also has a flat in this building.

I use Vodafone - it's worked everywhere I've tried to use it. I have a post-paid account, and the only big hit was the deposit I had to leave to be able to phone the States - and the other day when my bill was higher than the deposit, that feature was shut off - interesting in that my total bill to the States was only $6USD.
