Ahmedabad

Hi,

I'm leaving for Mumbai in ten days for a 30 days journey in Gujarat. I don't like big towns and would like to know if Ahmedabad worths the visit ???.

I must pass through on my way from Bhavnagar to Patan and have in mind the idea to avoid the city. I would appreciate information about nice places between Bhavnagar and Patan.

Actually in Amdavad there are many attractions of this state and it deserves at least a couple of days. Especially worth to visit Calico museum of textiles and Adalaj Vav.

I enjoyed Ahmedabad alot. Although many people just find it a large dirty Indian city. There are alot of back alleys with some old buildings worth exploring. Many nice 15th century mosques. Very friendly people and since its not as touristed as other cities more than likely if someone comes up to talk to you they just want to talk. I would highly recomend a half day trip out to Sarkhej ~10 km on the edge of the city. Its a 15th century tomb of a muslim saint. Built at one end of a large tank where all the local women wash clothes in the morning and surounded by some ruined structures. There is also Gandhi's ashram if your interested in that sort of thing.

i spent 10 days there last february, and there was heaps to do.
of interest - calico museum, gandhi ashram, step wells in and around ahmedabad (and i think there is one at patan), the pol community in the old city is particularly worth visiting.
if you are heading to patan you might consider a visit to siddphur, the home of the vohra community, well was the home, most of them live in the big cities or overseas now. but the architecture is amazing, reflecting their unique blend of hindu, muslim and european cultural influences.
i have uploaded a few photos of various places in ahmedabad in my photo gallery.
cheers

if and when in Ahmedabad, make sure to get to this restaraunt:

http://www.houseofmg.com/index.php

the snack bar was good but the rooftop deluxe meal was unforgettable, wow. I still remember how good the food was, how many different things they brought, how well it was prepared and the excellent service! I am quite picky about food and I was really happy there although the pollution is terrible... cough, cough

Hi BlueRose and Iwanttogoback,

The web is very good and the hotel looks really charming. For sure I'll go there at least to get a meal and probably will contact them once in Gujarat to book a room. Thanks a lot.

Hi Kashi,

I have already been in Ahmedabad, in fact I did'nt enjoy the city. I have moved before my schedule to Patan. Have stayed in Adalaj Vav and Sharkjev
were probaby the only places that i liked there. Jama Masjid Mosque and the gates are really nice but in general I did'nt liked the town. I also have been for a dinner in The House of M.G. The menu was fix and tipically Gujarati. Really good and at a reasonable good price. The Hotel has also a great old charm. I was in Suvidha Hotel reccommended in IM but not very good.

Actually I'm in Baroda after two days in Patan and almost a week in Udaipur ( just for resting after the "hard and dry" Gujarat ), Baroda is almost another boring indian town (at least for me ), the reason for coming here was to visit Champaner-Pavagadh (World Heritage Site) and Dhaboi and Chandod a charming old cities.

In any case thanks for the info.

Jorge

Don't forget the Kite Museum, the famous windows in the Sidi Sayid Mosque, the amazing Step Wells, and the buildings by Le Corbuisier.

Most of all - possibly the best food in all India, and certainly an UNFORGETTABLE setting - is Vishala, about 5kms out of town.
