Exclamation 1 week to do Gujarat and Rajasthan

Hi,

I went to India for a few months last year and i've luckily got the opportunity to go this easter for 2 weeks. I've got to spend a week in Mumbai. But I want to go to one place in Rajasthan and see the cricket match between India and Pakistan in Gujarat. Does anyone think its possible to do both of them in 1 week and get back to Mumbai?

If so, where would be one good destination in Rajasthan and what should I look out for in Gujarat?

thanks!

Sam.

I suppose most places in R or G could be reached in 1-2 days max, Ahmedabad is just 9-15 hours by train I read, depending on which train. Doing both of them might be rushing it a bit but of course you could pick two destinations in either state. Chittaurgarh is good for its beatiful fort and Bundi for same (less stunning but impressive) + palace + relaxed atmosphere but it seems everyone has their favorites.

In Gujarat Junagadh and its Girnar Hill are a nice destination; climbing up and down the mountain will take you a full day, seeing the other sights would merit another full day at least.

Diu is nice for a very pleasant beach, there used to be a hovercraft ferry back to Mumbai which would be very convenient (and about the same cost as a flight; may have been via Daman really) but I don't know if it's running.

You don't mention where the cricket match is in Gujarat. I assume Ahmedabad. Sarkhej is nice as a half day trip on the outskirts of Ahmedabad. You could also see Modhera and Patan in a day from there. You could easily spend a week in Gujarat alone if you wanted to head south to Junagadh and Diu as the previous post mentioned also I would highly encourage a visit to Palitana if your down that way. Or you could head west to Bhuj and spend a few days there. If your sold on Rajastan you can get to several cities from Ahmedabad by overnight train. Udaipur might be a good option. If you would like to see some picture of places around Gujarat you can check out the india galleries on my web site:

happy travels

I wasn't gonna self-advertise but for some pics of a tour in Rajasthan + Gujarat check out http://www.indiamike.com/photopost/s...cat/500/page/2 and later (starts in Delhi actually but well you get the idea). We had a month and rest assured that was far too short Also note that not all the places covered have been photographed, nor all the worthy sights in the places that have (the baoris -- or baolis, what is it? -- I could rave on about forever. "Step-wells" in short and a difficult phenomenon to describe. Basically vertical caves that people converted into places to fetch their water and seek refuge from the sun. The ones in Junagadh were the most impressive I've seen I think, and on a scale where no photograph could possibly do justice to it so I gave up although I certainly tried -- I was that guy running up and down the stairs trying to get a good angle. They're in the fort area which is nice enough in itself. Bundi has more modest but very beautiful baoris, also unphotographable. Give it a try though and show us the results.)

Bhuj was absolutely smashing yes. I don't know what became of it after the 2001 earthquake, I've asked a few times here but no news yet. So if anyone can tell us what it's like these days... it seems to be on the tourist trail still.

gujarat

Cheers for the replies,

I think I'm going to stick to Gujarat, I remember what it feels like to try and pack too much stuff into a small place of time in India.

Thanks for the advice on where to go in Gujarat, it'll come in useful now!

I finally got it in me to do a search on bhuj + earthquake on this forum (duh), there's some info including this article by AlanD from 2002. Not sure if that's good or bad news.

btw A Google image search on baori or baoli will give you plenty of nonsense but some nice pics too. Can't beat the real thing though.

baoris

Interesting-looking book + great photo series on baoris at http://www.theconnection.org/shows/2...829_b_main.asp

OK so much for today's watering holes, over + out.

I'm not sure now whether to recommend Bhuj or not.

The last person I recommended it to (young female American) stayed for only a day and left feeling very depressed.

The old city part of town was not a pretty sight with large areas where the buildings completely collapsed and I imagine rebuilding is still going on.

Talking Ditch the cricket match

Hi

i think u must ditch the match and go around Rajasthan.

Rajasthan has loads of good places, and one week might be a little less...so, i suggest u drop Gujarat for this visit.

Please..visit Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipaur...u will be able to do these 3 places in 1 week. Better still, if u go to only Jaipur and Jodhpur.

If you are Visiting gujrat first then from Ahemadabad you should move to Udaipur. From udaipur you have two options :

1. Visit Udaipur, then Chittaurgarh, move to Ajmer, Pushkar and finally jaipur

2. Visit Udaipur, Ranakpur and move to Jodhpur, Visit Jaisalmer and Bikaner.

For gujrat you already have enough suggestions

Rajasthan vs. Gujarat

It depends on what you want. Rajasthan has more impressive sites, but loads more tourists. Gujarat has less sites, and very few tourists, but more opportunity to mingle with the locals and get have the types of experiences you can't find in Guide books. The only place that I would put on par with the "sites" of Rajasthan is the Palitana, which is amazing. On Bhuj, yes Alan, much of the city is still leveled and its very dusty from all the construction. The major sites are a shadow of there former self. But its interesting to see the slow rebirth of the town. I was also there when the tsunami hit so it was a good visual on long road of reconstruction those areas have ahead. I enjoyed my brief 3 day stay there. The people are great, Mandvi was an interesting day trip you can see people building huge wooden ships by hand. The Kutch villages were also fun for me. They all start out wanting to just sell embroidery but I had a Polaroid camera and that seemed to get rid of the sales pitches and in one village I got an impromptu musical performance put on for me.

Don't miss Udaipur, I love it. My "musts" are Udaipur and Jaisalmer, though Jaisalmer is a bit far. Other options are Jodhpur and Jaipur, but Udaipur and Jaisalmer are my faves

(don't know anything about cricket, sorry)
