Which one are you?

This letter appeared in Herald a couple of days ago but hasn't shown on the online version. I wonder why. I managed to get a copy after it was handed round and have scanned it up.

There you go. Not the way I intended, but it's there. I'll get the hang of this thing one day.

Seems to be targetting Kashmiri's and Britons.

Even though it seems to be just one persons letter, the first paragraph of the article does not deserve to be part of any self respecting newpaper. Generalising Britons and Kashmiris in that way is ridiculous.

There are people in all parts of India with false ration cards and such; almost always with the connivance of corrupt officials.
This has been happening for decades; hordes from Bangladesh are now 'regularised' in India after the Pakistani army massacre there thirty five years ago.

This does not make the false paper issue right. But, in this and other articles in Goa, there is are assumptions, that a) this problem is limited to Goa and b)Goa has some special status (it doesnt) or c) that should be special laws for foreigners or other Indians living there. These laws, by and large are Indian Laws, and not Goan. Same like everywhere else.

Kashmir has special status in the Indian constitution. Many, including me, find this nonsense, but thats what it is.

However much politicians want to pander to jingoistic local sentiment, the fact is that if all the other states in India decided to kick out all the Goans living there back to Goa, the impact on the Goan economy and unemployment would be huge, regardless of tourism.

Sounds like the sort of ignorant racist crap that used to be rife in UK a few decades ago: Black family moved in, there goes the street; 'Pakis' (usually they hadn't ever been anywhere near Pakistan) running the local shop, there goes our culture, blah blah blah.

Remember that wonderful BBC killer of a satire Till Death Us Do Part?

Racist crap, yes. Ignorant, I don't think so. What is happening in Goa seems to be an informed attempt to cater to a part of the local constituency which must support this; politicians usually lead from the rear. Sometimes even their rear

Enforce the law as vigorously as you want. But demonising (by and large) peaceful and law abiding outsiders is a lot of bull.

This is pre-election season in Goa and there is a lot of rabble-rousing in progress by supporters, as well as detractors, of local polititians. Churchill Alemao has adopted a sort of 'man of the people' mantle as he is on the outs with his party and would also like people to forget that he was one of the members of parliament caught on camera taking a bribe. That one of his 'fans' would write an overwrought piece of crap like that letter is not surprising or of much significance.

But yes, there *are* a lot of Goans fed up with the way things have gone here over the past number of years and 'foreigners' are an attractive scape-goat for the scumbag polititians that are largely responsible for things getting as far out of hand as they appear to be.
