what's anjuna like these days?

In goa at palolem. Bit underwhelmed to be honest. Moving north to visit old goa, panaji. Thought I'd stay at anjuna. Spent quite a bit of time there over ten years ago, need a more mellow scene now. Question: is anjna such a dog's armpit. Impression I'm getting is that it might be a good option after all - lots of GOOD budget accommodation (unlike palolem) and nice variety of places to eat. Any thoughts by people who live there or have recent experience appreciated. And recs for double room with attached up to 1000. And please don't suggest arambol. I'm allergic to bob marley and blonde dreadlocks. Cheers!

Ha ha @ at that last sentence

I love Anjuna, i went last year, outside the peak season though, i think it's pretty busy in december.

I myself prefer the more relaxed scene of Anjuna, rather than the typical hot spots.

I havew always enjoyed staying i Villa Anjuna wich is more upscale by Anjuna standarts.

But check this place out, looks really cozy, i will be staying there next time

If you want mellow, why not go to Agonda!

I was wondering... what brown bread meant with respect to anjuna. I havent been there in a long time now, so didnt understand what you're trying to say bout anjuna.

brown bread - think it means the insufferably self-conscious cool of the dreadlock and chillum crew.

Well thanks for the input.

Palolem was nice, if overpriced. Agonda I thought scruffy and overrated. Patnem quite nice.

Anjuna after ten years might be brown bread, but maybe even better for it. Accommodation good and cheap. (Thanks for white negro tip: great hotel.) Also, I remembered just how more beautiful the villages and countryside of north goa are to south.

Just used Anjuna as a base really. Great food in Shore Bar – strange to be going there in such a chilled out context after the madness of youthful days there. Sneery Hippy quota disappointingly low. Quite a mixed bag of people really. Kasmhiris trying to sell me drugs on the run down to the beach from the bus stand side. Annoying and seedy bunch of people they are, and I've no doubt they'd be happy to shop you to the police after they've sold you some old boot polish.

Did go to Arambol. The place is ruined! Utterly ruined. (Not that I liked the vibe much anyway.) Mandrem, just south of it, was beautiful though.

Didn't get back to Chapora. Always seemed a bit gloomy to me anyway.

Goa has changed. The beaches are being eaten by tourism. Yet it still has a charm. A faded charm, like an old Portuguese ballroom in a crumbling colonial mansion.

Very nice. Beautiful courtyard, quiet location, very friendly family who run it.

Rooms are clean, fairly cool even just with fan and away from noise. Even have TV if you can't bear to miss an episode of Jailed Abroad.

I paid 550 but it will go up, as I'm sure you know, as time goes on.
