hi,
i will be making my fourth trip to goa this year and in all my trips, as i am a vegetarian, food has been a bit of a bummer and people often tell me i might as well be dead than vegetarian in goa. i have tried little italy and this other place called bean me up (which i think closed down; can't seem to remember where it was located anyway...). looking for other options now. i usually get pretty sick of eating pasta with mushrooms in a dubious white sauce everywhere i go. am looking for restaurant recommendations (breakfast, lunch, dinner) where i can have a good vegetarian meal (any cuisine), which doesn't taste like an after-thought. not sure where exactly i will stay, but it will definitely be in baga or calangute (or candolim perhaps). all recommendations within bardez/ north goa are welcome. thanks, hema Last edited by hemarprasad : Aug 21st, 2007 at 01:06. It would help others reply if you indicated which part of Goa you were going to be in.

If you are in north Goa there is a new veggie restaurant on the Calangute/Candolim road. It only opened last season. We are not veggie but really enjoyed the food there. I think it's called Sharanam Green, it's on the left hand side as you go from Calangute to Candolim.

In Panaji you have the Kamat Hotel which has been there for time immemorial. Popular menu being standard thali or dosa etc. Basically, with some risk of generalization, in Goa for pure veggi, you best bet would be a gujarati restaurant or a southern Indian one. Other knowledgeable members please correct me if I am wrong.

I have noticed that Sharanam Green - 'open 24 hours' except on weekends and week days and during the night too so really open just during the day :-)

We rented a house in Arambol for five weeks and are both veggie and found a number of vegetarian restaurants there. There's quite a good Tibetan one called something like The Laughing Buddha

Vegetarian
I beleive the Plantain Leaf in Calangute/Baga on the main road and upstairs is a longstanding vegetarian restaurant. Very basis but as it has been going for years assume it does well.

Veg food... coast and towns
The coast tends to have few veg options (even Goan Hindus are largely fish-eaters too). But the towns have good options.

The Plaintain Leaf in Calangute has amazing veggie food. My husband and I travelled to Goa earlier this year, he is a vegetarian and never just about every restaurant we visited had an incredible amount of options to choose from. Im not a meat eater but found I was eating mainly vegetarian food as it was so good. If you visit the Plaintain leaf they have this Okra dish which is the best thing Ive ever tasted and thats not normally a vegetable I would rave about!

Plantain Leaf - only veggie restaurant which has made me VERY ill. Coming from Baga to Calangute - before you turn left at the roundabout to go up Calangute High Street - on the left is a fairly new veggie place called Shree Sagar which is OK. There are a couple of veggie places at the top of Calangute High Street opposite the large Temple which are both a bit dodgy looking but they do great Masala Dosas. Going towards Candolim from the Temple is a new complex called Sharnham Green (just past the turning to Little Italy) near the Ice Factory on the same side of the road. They have a nice veggie restaurant - a bit more upmarket than most but the prices and the food are ok - eaten there a few times.
Last season a few small veggie places opened up on this road. Navtara in Mapusa is brilliant - before you get into Mapusa from Calangute opposite the large temple (which is the field on your right). The Navtara in Panjim is nowhere near as good as the one in Mapusa. Kamat near the big church have very good veggie burgers and whilst you are in Panjim do not miss the Hotel Fidalgo which do an amazing Thali for 125rps - all you can eat with about 4 different drinks. Shiva Sagar is ok if not a bit rich. |

The Udipi Restaurant in Chaudi does typical South Indian thali kind of food. It's real popular with locals. And they have awesome lassis'.

Hi All,
Two veggie restaurants i really recommend are: 'Bean me up'(near Vagator petrol pump) & 'Blue Tao' in Anjuna which also both have many vegan options. Regards TDK |
