Vagator or Anjuna??
Vagator or Anjuna??
Hi there,
Have been reading various reviews on both Vagator an Anjuna and am finding it really difficult to make up my mind on which destination to choose.
I arrive in Goa on 30th Dec for a two-week stay with my girlfriend. We plan to spend a week in North Goa over New Year's Eve and then travel down South probably to Palolem for the second week for a chill out.
I really need to know which beach is the quieter one - I have read so many mixed reviews on the two areas.
Also, which area has the nicer beach in terms of sand, water etc?
In know the beaches are close together on the map but just how close? Walking distance?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!
Chriso

Chriso,
Haven't been to either, but I think Vegator would suit you better... but realistically, if you don't have a reservation by now, any place would be good (I was suppose to be down there on New Year's eve to party with my girlfriend, but just can't find any resonable accomadation)... on map they are but 1-2 km apart, 15-30 minute walk would be my conservative estimate... also try Baga/Calengute, Candolim (has more resorty atmosphere)... good luck!

Its a halfhour walk on the rocks from vagator to anjuna beach. or more... anyways these days anjuna beach is a dump for swimming etc. Arambol looks nicer and if you want to party you will stay in chapora and walk to vagator beach for a swim and to find out about the night partiys in the ninebar.
http://www.ikuru.se My art.
Definitely Vagotor, In fact theres 3 vagator beaches big vagator, small & middle all seperated by small rocky outcrops. And all suitable for a dip, though I say that with the warning of strong undercurrents so unless you're a very competant swimmer don't go out more than waist deep,,,,,,,,,,,
Small vagator is backed by a steep cliff, though there are paths up it, from the top it's only 15mins over the headland to anjuna.
Anjuna unless you're "anjuna wise" would be best to be avoided as a place to stay, a visit for the fleamarket or whatevers ok, Or if you're a nostalgia freak then yeah you'll always go pay homage there,,,,,,,
Going the other direction from vagator is chapora, with perhaps a little more in the way of shops etc though accomadation tends to be more scattered in the interior, Wherever you go you'll be offered rooms ,,,,,,,,,
Happy Travelling

Will/Seventies Hippy,
Thanks for the repies - exactly what I needed.
I think Vagator is the best bet. I would like to get the first few nights booked and then get the rest of the accommodation sorted when I am there.
Do you guys have any names of places to stay in the area? Vagator preferably but Chapora would also be an option. Price is not a major issue.
Thanks!

Just wondering if you think that people will still offer rooms around the 29th-30th Dec. And at a reasonable price (< 600 Rs)??Josh

Ask the guys running the beach shacks,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,Someone will always offer or know of a room available, though you'll have to be there on the spot for it. And be prepared to take whats available.
If you was phoming or emailing around you'd get the reply from those sort of establishments that they're full up.
If you have difficulty finding a room which I think you will arriving on the 30th you could make your way down to the little vagator beach
How it used to be was everyone would hang out in an area on the beach with all teh bags of everyone who slept in the bamboo shacks on the cliffs
Not sure if its stillo like that
If youa re desperate leave your bags with a restaurant etc and but a hammock to tie between trees ...
If you find anything I'd advise you take it however much or you'll spend a fair chunk of your holiday trying to find accomodation
Good luck and have a good one

For a' that, an a' that,
It's coming yet for a' that,

December no chance for decent hotels. BOOK NOW if you are a foreigner,
the regulations in GOA are that you must have an address if you have any problem or want help from police. If you are with the crowd and if they suspect you are smoking any banned stuff, you will be in trouble without a proof of address. With a valid address (receipt from Hotel or an Indian they will let you go provided you are not under the influence of the stuff and not in possession.
FOLLOW THEIR LAW AND THEY WILL HELP YOU ENJOY YOUR STAY AS LONG AS YOU ARE FRIENDLY TO LOCALS TO CERTAIN EXTENT.

Folks, I went through the past msgs, but am left wondering if any of you who have been to Vagator, Anjuna or Chapora could suggest a place or two or three to stay... The thread on hotels in Goa is pretty short... tks a lot.

Hi there MrZorro Dude and wellcome to the club.Best got damn forum there is on the whole WWW!
Now...
It all Depends what you want to pay really.
If you want really cheap, than the best way to go is to ask once you get there. For example you go to the Green Lantern (I think thats the name of the restaurant) in Chapora and you ask them to help you with a room, they will show you the way to a verry nice famely that let rooms for something like 100rs a night (clean rooms and allso a separate small house). Now this kind of accomondation is verry basic, but if you ask me its the Way to go. You have a clean Bed or matras on the floor and electricety and a cold shower outside the house and a outdoor toilet.
Then you got a NICE guesthouse in Anjuna called the Manalis Guesthouse but these days it will cost you more to live there (maybe 400 rs a night or something) They used to have small palmtre huts on the roof of it for like 40 rs a night But I dont know if that is still going on.
My advice Just go and ask around, YOU ALLWAYS FIND SOMETHING! The people who say different probably never looked properly. There is allways something, someone wanting to let you a house or a room or whatver you need really. It just gets harder around cristmas/new year etc, but even then, you wont have to live on the street if you just show up and ask around.
Shanti, Shanti.

You'll always find accomadation in these places, Goan people would rather give up one of their own rooms to you, & make do themselves out the back than see several hundred rupees walk away. Thats how it always used to be, (and still is the best way) that way you've always got someone keeping an eye on your stuff,,,,,,,Happy Travelling
