Turtles, humans fight for space in Morjim

BY ARUN NAIK
PERNEM, NOV 21 — For a change, the sea turtles and humans are battling for the same space at Morjim beach in Pernem taluka.

And with the assistance of the Forest Department, the sea turtles seem to have won the duel, much to the anger of locals in Morjim.

The Forest Department’s notification of Morjim beach for the ‘Sea Turtle Conservation Project’ has upset local shack owners and those villagers who had earlier supported the Sea Turtle project have now opposed the notification.
Since the last 10-15 years, Morjim beach became a key tourist destination among foreigners and a lot of beach shacks had sprung up in the area.
Recently, the Tourism Department allotted shacks along the entire coastal belt, except for Morjim beach, and this has irked the shack owners in Morjim.
