To Arambol by train - where to stop?

Hello,

I will go to Goa by train from Mumbai.
First idea was to stop in Madgaon and then take bus or taxi.

I noticed 2 stations closer to Arambol : Sawantwadi and Pernem.

Where would it be more convenient to stop regarding bus or taxi?

Thank you
Kailash

Pernem would be good if your train is stopping there.

Will you be taking the usual kids?

If so, why Arambol?

Just wondering, what do Hindu gods mean to Buddhist children?

Hi Steve,

yes as usual, I'm taking the kids.
2 of them will see the ocean for the first time and the others are poor (very poor) swimmers.

Why Arambol?

Because there is the lake...

I suggest you consider Murudeshwar on the Karnatakan coast.

It's a little harder to get to, but has some awesome statues of Shiva (and others, so my photo gallery), has some wonderful stories about the place, is little visited by foreign tourists, is a completely hassle free experience and everything is priced normally, I absolutely loved the place and can tell you how to get there.

I'm not sure if it has a lake, but Jog falls is a 2-hour bus ride away.

I heard from a few people last year that Arambol has lost what made it so special and was becoming just like any other place in Goa, I've not been to Arambol, so don't know what it's like.

I've been to Arambol in 2004 and the kids loved it.

You just have to walk a few meters and swim in the sea or the lake.

Sundays were not nice : a lot of local people coming to the lake, getting drunk and leaving empty bottles.
With a german lady and a english man, the monday morning was for cleaning the lake surroundings a little bit.

Don't know much about how it is nowadays.

Will have a look on Murudeshwar but really the lake was a BIG plus point.
Your information about how to get would be welcome : will tell you more in a day or 2.

i'm not sure about it being just like everywhere else in goa steve, but it was certainly a lot busier than i had pictured when i visited last year. One thing it does have over other places in goa, is fantastic food

If the train you take stops at Pernem, then get off at Pernen, otherwise, Tivim is the next closest stop....here you will have to take a taxi or Rikshaw to Mapuca, then the local bus Mapuca to Arambol.
I liked the lake and the sea water combi, my kids just enjoyed it.

The Konkan Kanya Express from Mumbai to Madgaon stops at Pernem. Its the stattion for north Goa, incld Arambol.
Thivim for Anjuna.
Karmali for Panaji
Canacona for Palolem.

Josan,

I can't recommend you any place. A few years back, I rented a house that is not longer for rent. So this year, I'm just going there and I'm sure I'll find a good place to stay.

Thre are a few hotels here on IM in the hotels listing : have a look.

Train stations...

Arambol is in North Goa (actually, the first taluka or sub-district in Goa). So choose a northern station. Pernem preferred, it's close. But not all trains stop at Pernem. Failing that, try Tivim (a village outside Mapusa).

Karmali (outside Panjim) would be further south), Margao even further away, and Canacona, as far as you can get from where you want to be :-)

Still wondering about this, but don't want to start a thread about it, it would end in the usual arguing.

Do Buddhist and Hindus pray at each other’s temples? or is this a strict no-no.

Do Hindu gods fascinate Buddhist kids?

As Many Hindus consider Buddha to be the Incarnation of Vishnu , they view Vishnu with respect. When i was in Bylekuppe in Karnataka , the Buddhist kids they knew all the incarnations of Vishnu. So I guess they are more enthusiastic about t Hindu gods rather than say Islam.

I have not encountered Hindus or Buddhists praying at each other's temples , but it won't be a taboo as these religions share some basic beliefs.

Thanks batistuta, I suspected these religions were close, add to that the natural curiosity of children and I suspect Buddhist kids would enjoy somewhere like Murudeshwar with all it's statues.

But I think the Buddhist kids enjoy anywhere kailash takes them.
