The Tragedy of Goa : An article in TOI

BY SHOBHAA DE

Quote:
Pity I am not Remo, Goa's famous balladeer, or else my lament could have
been set to music. Goa brings out the poet in all of us. Rather, it used
to. But looking at its tattered state today, I feel like weeping, not
singing.

Shoba De is famous as a bollywood muckraker. I'd like to hear more about this topic from credible observers.

Byronic did tell me last week when I picked him up from the airport after 6 months in India that thr russians were in Goa in a very big way, so that checks out.

For what it's worth- I've never had any desire to return after the winter I spent on Anjuna in 72.

The russian mafia is in evidence and can be violent and brutal - however, few tourists will encounter this side of Goa. The graft and corruption have been there for a very long time.

The Russian/Ukranian mafia is quite active all over Asia. After Glasnost and the fall of the Wall, circa 1990, I began seeing blonde Russian prostitutes in Macao and Hong Kong. Then they started showing up in Bangkok! Nowadays, here in Thailand, islands like Koh Samui and perennial party towns like Pattaya are controlled heavily by these groups. They have no power without the complicity of both the local police and government officials. There are some scary looking characters running around that look like they just came off a movie set. Welcome to globalization.

Thankfully, I avoid her trite with the Indian Express. Half the size, infinitely more informing.
