Question Teaching Offer In Goa - Is it Legit?

Hi Everyone,

I am looking to spend up to a year living and working in India and have been applying for jobs to this end...

I got a tentative offer of a teaching position at the European School in Goa - Is anyone familiar with it?

Though I am an award-winning journalist and I have experience teaching conversational English in Japan and Korea (they were part-time jobs for which I had no training or certification - more like leading English conversations on current affairs at large corporations with junior execs and correcting their usage and pronunciation, etc.), I was surprised this institution (a "real" school, if you will)offered me a full-time teaching job - am I getting in over my head?

I responded to an ad for a teaching position but said, 'I'm not really qualified to teach but perhaps you need administrative help or a teacher's assistant?'

Also, the administrator said the pay was 30,000-35,000 IR per month (about 850 US) - does this sound right? Would it be unseemly to ask for more for this full-time position? I know the economy is very different in India and this is more than many indian families make but I will still need to be taking care of some bills in the states during this year (school loans, etc. grrrr...).
Sorry to discuss delicate money matters with all of you but I don't have anyone here at home that has spent time in India that I can ask about any of this!!!

Would love any feedback from anyone about this job, life in Goa, working in India as a foreigner, etc. !!

I am not familiar with this school and so I checked the website of this school which I must say is fairly disappointing. Very little information on when this school was started and what kind of facilities are available. The name of the principal/administrator is conspicuous by its absence.

Actually Cedargirl, as a CELTA qualified teacher of English, with the best will in the world.....you are getting in over your head in a school if your are not trained. A decent school will expect lesson plans, observed lessons, examination schedules etc. I understand what you've been doing in other countries; I worked in Thailand for many years, but conversational English on a corporate level and school-based English, are very different things.

good luck

Wink Two Sites - One School

Hi All,

Thanks for your insights. It seems these two schools are the same, they have the same address and phone number - confusing!

Any other thoughts on life, work, teaching and Goa are welcome...

Don't expect to make a lot of money working as a teacher in Goa. The pay is very low by international standards. Another thing to keep in mind is that working as a teacher in India is a lot more difficult as comapared to the west.

Goa is a good place to holiday but a lousy place to work. I will not advise anyone to move to Goa to make a living.

30 to 35 thousand is quite a lot in Indian terms. It was my original budget amount for living here!

However, bear in mind that inflation is currently at 13% and, despite the waffling of politicians shows no sign of reducing. I don't know if pay rises are going to catch up inflation!
