Taking a phone to Goa, what's involved?
Because of a family emergency last year, I'm taking a cheap pay as you go phone this time. If I buy a cheap phone in the UK on Vodafone, will it need to be unlocked over there? I'll go to The Elephant shop in Candolim if I need to. Is there anything else I need to know about? I shouldn't need the phone but after last year I'm taking no chances!
Thanks.
Thanks.

A budget unlocked phone with sim and some talktime will cost you less than INR 2000 in india. If you want to bring one from home, make sure its unlocked and runs the same bands as used here. Airtel, Vodafone are good choices for a sim.
Seriously, it's so much easier to organise at home. Global roaming.

Are you sure? I would have thought that was by far the most expensive option?Goa is totally geared to foreigners wanting a mobile connection and it is very inexpensive.
Jimmy, your suggestion to visit the Elephant Shop is the best suggestion by far. Rather than spend for out for a new phone surely you know someone with an old phone. If necessary, unlocking is dirt cheap.

Not worth it. Better to get a local sim card.

Your best option is to buy a cheap phone in Goa. Yo can get a phone for about 14 GBP. When your holiday is over you can gift it to some needy person in Goa. Just to summarize, Jimmy, the OP already has a PAYG phone through Vodafone.

This is not about buying a phone in Goa, Jimmy wants a phone that will work in Goa. He already has one. His provider can flick a switch so that it works wherever he travels.

He doesn't expect to need the phone. The cost is immaterial. The rigmarole to get a phone or SIM card in India is not.

Hope this helps?

The thread title is taking a phone to Goa, not buying one.

Does this help?

And if you're not going to need it the cost is immaterial - and I'd suggest no one has actually costed it.If I am NOT going to buy a Rolls Royce car, the cost is immaterial.
