Single Female Travellor

Hi,

Will be in Goa in December.
Im female and travelling alone. Is it safe to do so?
I'm asian so its not too much of a culture shock but I have never been to India, so am a bit worried.

I hear staying in north goa is better than in the south, as its more happening? is that true. I want to splurge and stay in a 5 star resort (first time for everything! normally its the really budget kind of accomodation for me), so any recommendations? What is good to see in goa?

wld appreciate any help.

Hi Steelemagnolia!
I've been to India 6 times, both travelling alone and with friends and I must say that I feel very, very safe in India. Even more safe than in Sweden which is a very peaceful country.
You will meet tons of people in Goa. I've only stayed in northern Goa (Anjuna, Vagator, Arambol) but I haven't stayed at any fancy places so I can't recommend any hotels. If you have any questions feel free to pm me.
Enjoy!

Hello SteelMagnolia and welcome

Whether or not India is a culture shock to an Asian rather depends on where youcome from. I can imagine some of the squeaky-clean Japanese I used to work with in London finding it a huge culture shock! (having said that India atracts lots of japanese tourists).

Particularly as you going "expensive", I think you will feel very safe.

Some of the backpackers and hardened treckers around here might not consider it a good intro to India but I started off doing just that, expensive hotels and cars and drivers ---and ended up living here

As far as luxury resorts in Goa go, the Leela resort looked good. My wife and I stayed at Renaissance nearby which was not too bad, but the Leela looked a notch above. Our trip was a few years back - so my opinion is not necessarily the most up to date. In the resorts, your interaction with India at large is rather limited, which was OK with us as we had had our fill already. I do think both Renaissance and the Leela were in Southern Goa. The closest town was Margao, which was not too bad but not much to write home about either...

There are many Goa experts on IM, so you'll get more informed opinions soon...

hey, thanks y'all.

I will be in Mumbai and then hop over to goa. any idea on how to take the rail transfers from mumbai to goa and how long is the travel? Do I book it in advance?

I read some bits about kerala. should i go there next, from goa? is there an easy way to travel from goa to kerala.

i know i said i want to go "expensive", but i rather save on travel and not go by flight.

Hey Nick, Im not Japanese. But to an extent, I guess, it will still be a scary experience. But I don't wish to take a guided package tour, you know. Sucks all the joy of really going solo. I'll take it slow and if things get screwed along the way, its okay. Carpe Diem and all that!

Thanks again guys and any help is appreciated.

Stay in north Goa if you want the clubs, restaurants, nightlife etc. The south is for the 5 star hotels and pretty much nothing else happening. The Fort Aguada run by the Taj group does have a couple of 5 star resorts in the north though
