Several foreign nationals to be deported from Goa

Ingo Grill to go
HERALD CORRESPONDENT
CALANGUTE, FEB 13 — Ingo Grill is in news once again. The Goa Police have now found sufficient evidence to deport this infamous German national after he stole media attention for his “undesirable activities” in the State.

Highly placed source in the police department have confirmed that Ingo Grill has been served a notice under section 3/2 C of the Deportation of Foreigners Act, which gives the government powers to deport a foreign national who is undesirable.

It has been learnt that a Russian national has already been deported and a deportation notice has been served on Ingo Grill and his wife.
Police sources claimed that they maintained a watch on the activities of over 200 foreigners in the State and are likely to issue deportation notices to well over 30 foreigners, most of whom have been staying in Goa for several months.

Yes, I am curious to know what those "undesirable activities" could be? Is the Goa government watching the many Bollywood movies that are filmed in goa and filled with undesirable scenes", oops, I mean "item numbers". One film (Musafir, I believe) was entirely shot in Goa (in and around Taj Exotica Resort) and had just about anything that one associates with the word "vulgar." Save us from the faux-moral police!

The real reasons are foreigners engaging in commercial activities without the required clearance or visas.. This is a crime in every country...

CALANGUTE, Feb 4: The villagers of Assagao are fighting another battle after Ingo Grill, this time illegal quarrying on the hills of Assagao. PANJIM, Nov 3: If Ingo Grill could have his way, then Assagao Comunidade land on the plateau may soon become the next entertainment destination of the world. While the 80 gaunkars of the Assagao Comunidade may have been misled by the concept of a simple Saturday Night Bazaar, investigations by Herald have revealed that Ingo had larger plans and the Saturday Night Bazaar was a small percentage of this plan...Not at all perturbed over the furore about the controversy of the leasing of the Assagao-Siolim plateau, a confident Ingo said, "I am confident that 99 per cent of the village will vote for this proposal."(H)

The Gomantek Times Weekender recently ran an exposee on paedophile rings. One in North Goa and one centered in Colva in the South. It more or less named people involved. I hope these filth are on the list!

Looks like the government has finally got around to cracking down on people carrying out business activities on tourist visas.
" Meanwhile, the State police had issued a circular to all police stations asking to furnish information pertaining to foreigners’ business activities and verification of their passport and visas.

The information available from the foreigners’ branch of the Goa police revealed that the foreigners on business visas are mainly Britons, Greeks, Dutch, Germans, Israelis, Italians and Norwegians.

Besides, there are 2,414 registered foreigners staying in Goa for a period of over six months and some of them have also maintained bank accounts illegally. The foreigners on business visas having bank accounts need to compulsorily have a Reserve Bank of India’s clearance."

Goa was touted as Indian face to the globalized world and so on. On my visit to Goa I had an impression that such advertisements have no touch with ground reality - it is tiny provincial very Indian state with limited and poor facilities for conducting business. I understand concern of locals with ecology, deterioration of ecology, destruction of traditional way of life, customs and so on, though I did not notice any concerted sensible efforts to keep their place clean - shocking!
Yes I know about some Russians (mostly in tourist business) who wanted to conduct business in Goa. Anyway they are not big number comparing with Indians who settled in Russia. These Russians found attitude of some locals very unfriendly. One girl was working in travel business in Goa, inviting Russian tourists and after few years she was fluent in Hindi (she still struggles to say anything in English). Once she was driving scooter in Madgaon and was stopped by traffic policemen. They asked her to show her driving licence and she showed it but they were not satisfied (I don't know exactly what was wrong). After ugly scenes and heated exchange I think she was arrested and her scooter was confiscated. She never saw it again. She ruefully had to leave Goa and now settled in Hyderabad - the best city in India for making business I've heard. I wished her luck.
Local Goans are fed up with foreigners and behave often very rudely. Not so many of them go abroad where they dont' have so many difficulties with set up of their own small business if compare with foreigners in Goa.

It was quite interesting to read this post....usually I come to know only about foreigners staying illegaly in my country and being deported....

It is really sad that there has to be such steps like deporting foreigners... Yes, it is a crime in every country to stay on a tourist visa and do business, but this article from Herald sounds like they don't want foreigners at all earning money there, even if they stay on business visas....

I think Goa and India in general can profit from foreigners working especially in the tourist industry (as far as I know the manager of the Taj Exotica is German...) as they can help to keep an international standard (because they know what foreigners want).

In my dreams everyone could settle wherever she/he wants, respecting the local traditions and laws. I know that this sounds naive, but I still hope that one day it will be possible....

Goa is such a nice place, I hope it will still be possible that locals and foreigners live side by side and profit from eachother. I found Goan people very tolerant, and I think unless the foreigners accept some rules, they are quite welcome.

I can't judge about Ingo Grill, I have never been to his night market.... But I feel there are bigger dangers to the beauty of Goa than a few ppl on tourist visa doing small business (I am not talking about drugs etc. !!!!)

Police sources claimed that they maintained a watch on the activities of over 200 foreigners in the State and are likely to issue deportation notices to well over 30 foreigners, most of whom have been staying in Goa for several months.
The foreigners identified for deportation had been visiting Goa frequently and as they were indulging in “undesirable activities” were seen fit by the State police to be sent back to their respective countries and the exercise had been carried out through the home department.
Meanwhile, this could also lead to the process of banning the foreigners from obtaining a fresh visa to re-enter the country through Indian missions aboard.
The police are also collecting vital information on some foreigners who are suspected to be involved in financial crimes and drug peddling or any other illegal activities.
It has also been learnt that the State police are in the process of forwarding the case history of the “undesired” foreigners to the Indian mission in their respective countries in an effort to put a stop the issue of fresh visas to them.
Sources claimed that there are over 200 foreigners on business visas from foreign countries engaged in business activities in Goa, apart from foreigners coming on the tourist visas and still trying their hand on local business, most of whom are operating along the coastal belt.
Sources informed Herald that most of the foreigners who are on a watch for deportation are based in North Goa.
Meanwhile, the State police had issued a circular to all police stations asking to furnish information pertaining to foreigners’ business activities and verification of their passport and visas.
The information available from the foreigners’ branch of the Goa police revealed that the foreigners on business visas are mainly Britons, Greeks, Dutch, Germans, Israelis, Italians and Norwegians.

An interesting piece from the Gomantak Times published by GOACOM,

"Pakistan Occupied Goa?
LINE OF NO CONTROL
CALANGUTE: Goa, the paradise for tourists is also a perfect theatre for the nefarious games of terrorists and smugglers. It is not just the Israelis and Russians who are robbing the coastal belt of its innocence, but even a few Kashmiris have joined hands with separatist groups from Kashmir, to destroy the land, which sheltered them in the 1980s. Several Kashmiri youth proliferated into Goa with virtually nothing in hand. Later, they set up shops in the coastal belt of Goa and sold carpets, jewellery and furniture made from walnut wood. However, over the years the trade has undergone major changes and there are many operators in Goa from Pakistan occupied Kashmir and Afghanistan who indulge in illegal activities along with some Kashmiris. There are many indians who have worked abroad who could probably perform the same service. With 1 billion in population, there are hardly any skills that business cannot find among Indians. Plus with an unemployment rate of 10%, there are lot of Indians waiting for these jobs.

Same as many countries in the world. Just as there are lots of Indians who prefer to work abroad for the higher wages, there are lots of foreigners (also with unemployment problems) who want to work in India for the sun and cheaper cost of living.
