Retiring to Goa - Help & Advise Please !!!
Hello and good afternoon to you all.
Before i steam on in it's best if i give you all a bit of background as to why i need help.I am currently in the process of trying to sort my Grandad's last wish in life to retire to Goa. He was born in India way back in the 20's and later served in the British Armed forces. Both his parents being of English/Irish nationality. Obviously back then India was under our commonwealth. The reason i belive this may or may not be important is that he can hold both a UK and Indian passport. Which i hope will help us to get him a property????. I need advise on where the best place is for us to look for property, North or south ?? I would prefer him to be close to amenities ie, people and hospitals ! bearing in mind that he is nearly 80 years old, but might i add fit as a fiddle for his age ! where do i begin when trying to get him residancy or looking for genuine property advisors etc.... We do have a fair but if capital for him to start his new life but i need to know that he will be safe and happy in the location we find. and finally, whether or not it matters he can speak the lingo, he actually speaks three different dialects, although i would'nt know other wise (all sound the same to me !) Please help..... time is precious the old man is itching to get away ! Many many thanks. Evo |

I guess the first thing would to get his PIO status sorted out in order for him to be able to stay in Goa.
I'm no expert in this but I would be looking at a rental/lease if I was you. Buying in Goa comes with a host of pitfalls and at the age your grandad finds himself is it really necessary to buy!! |

I think you should look at a 6 month tourist visa now, considering his age. After 6 months, reevaluate. India is not suitable for old people without help (as in another family member present)
Musings about India at his age should be seen in a pragmatic light. I'll bugger off now....

Suggest get a PIO anyways, come down to India, rent out a place, and let you Dad decide where he would like to live. There are some options, like Miramar, Donapaula, being the expensive area, or Assagao, Siolim...etc...being the budget area....

Advocate Bruno Nazareth who has an office in Mapusa is good in matters relating to Real Estate. His office telephone no. is 0091-0832-2250012.
It is advisable to have a caretaker who is close and known to your granddad. I wouldnt advise him to be alone even though he is as fit as a fiddle. Excercise caution. |

Digital is on it here. Nostalgia blinds one to the reality of a country that has seen enormous change in just the last 30 years I have been traipsing in and around..

Yep. The idea is sometimes so powerful that the reality is ignored.

south goa
I would suggest South Goa, somewhere between Majorda and Benaulim, close to beach and Margao (city) where there is Apollo hospital. Just returned from here after furnishing my flat. (2.5 months)
Property available around here from £15k to £200K I suggest rent for 6 months here and see if this suites him. |
