Protection for tourists in Goa...

If I remember recently the Chief Minister asserted that tourists to Goa should,' take responsibility for themselves.' He said,' Foreign women should avoid insecure places, and should not wonder at night without fear of the consequences. You can't expect the government to provide police on the beaches after midnight.'

Less than two weeks later he is stating that Russians will be given full protection from the State when visiting Goa.

Seems to be a bit of a mixed-up place at the moment.

Something sure smells rotten in Goa at the moment, and I don't mean the cashew Feni! \

I'm not sure I'll pass by that way anytime soon by the looks of things.

What a shame!

Am i missing out on something here? Why should one nationality be given protection.. I read in linked article that Russians are buying land in Goa, are they allowed to buy land or properties in India?

Goa politics is like a revolving door...keeps spinning and spinning.

The media I suppose. I trust both in equal measure ie: not at all.

This is probably in response to complaints from the Russian consulate. There are lots of non-gangster Russians who enjoy vacations in India.

Russian Consulate expresses concern over Goa security

Perhaps some good that might come out of this would be more people admitting what has happened to them in Goa so people can get a clearer picture of what the situation really is.

But then there is still always the question of political will.

Load of crap - I remember the fuss the Goan police and authorities put on when the son of the Speaker of the Croatian parliament was murdered 3 years ago.

That too was initially classified by the police as accidental. As soon as the cameras were gone, the matter was dropped.

I believe the death count for tourist in Goa for 2007 was 61.
That is a lot for one state. I was in Goa mostly Anjuna Beach for January of 1971, I don't believe I saw 61 tourist or travellers. I have not been back to Goa since and think I will keep skipping it as I head back to India from time to time.
India is a very safe place but Goa seems high risk from getting killed, mugged or robbed by the police department.

Not all the deaths are by attackers - a lot are drownings( locals as well as tourists drown due to rough sea),dangerous driving conditions on all sides counts for some, then there is the odd drugs mishap - same as the world over, just more publicised as people think paradise exists. I always manage to find a safe space in Goa and as I am writing this I obviously come back in one piece!
