I referred to this in the buying property in Goa thread.

What is happening in India is this; that investment in property, with rising prices, has moved into tourist areas across the country. People buying for investment are looking at one thing only; capital appreciation. Ecological and aesthetic factors be damned.

We have destroyed our cities. Now we are taking moving on.

Goa seems to have a 500 year history of outsiders arriving there, in hopes of some kind of personal fulfullment, "ruining" it, and moving on . . .plus del la change, plus de la meme chose!

Plus the snob value attached to owning a holiday home in Goa. Many yuppies in Mumbai and Delhi buy properties in Goa with the sole purpose of showing off to their friends.

I really wish that the protest in Goa is successfull. It is such a shame how greedy people destroy the future of others...

same thing happens here in my area....developers wanting to destroy bald eagles' nesting habitat for some luxury condos -- fortunately it was stopped!

Very true.

Another factor is that housing finance is easy for anybody with a halfway decent salary

And, as long as prices are rising, it becomes a no brainer. When prices fall, however, the stuff hits the fan.

Development included, I think a bigger threat to the encironment is mining. Goa and adjacent areas Karnataka are heavily under the influence of miners, and with iron ore prices at high levels, greed is playing a big role. Unfortunately it is the bio-diversity hot-spot - the western ghats which is very rich in iron ore.

Unhappy

Unfortunately Goa is changing - not for the better, i'm seriously thinking it will be my last year - I've seen the best years I think. Lots of out of staters and greed is paramount on every one's mind, its a shame. Still, the world is a big place, I'll be looking for the Goa that was about 8 years ago.

It would be interesting to hear if other peoples views have changed about goa recently.

Goa was the first part of India I visted, I used to love the place, you cant beat the first impressions right, but I havnt been there since 2005, I know its not that long to have not visited but I know its long enough for a place like goa to dramatically change, the landscape, and peoples attitude alike.
