Palolem or Patnem?

Which is the best beach destination in south Goa? To choose between Palolem and Patnem what are the merits and demerits of one over the other?

Palolem is more crowded as compared to Patnem. I would prefer staying at Patnem & visiting Palolem during day time.

Also check out @ Agonda beach

ah, there was a time, not so very long ago when noone had even heard of patnem...i guess it's not as well kept a secret as it once was but still much much nicer than the metropolitan city of palolem!

Sad to say it but Palolem is not the place it once was (I'm sure this has been echoed on this forum many times). It's still a picture perfect beach but there are many people now, many restaurants, and also many dogs which at night spoil the tranquility of the beach and prevent 'jiggy jiggy'. I would agree with the previous poster about Agonda, it's only about 5km north of Palolem but very little development - you can always rent a bike/ get a ride into Palolem for food/drinks/beach.

palolem and patnem are only about 30mins walk apart, so its not difficult to check both out for yourself and then decide. patnem's cheaper, less busy, but not quite so aesthetically pleasing as palolem (if you're looking west at least!)... they're building a 5star hotel on the beach south of patnem (its raglam or rajbag or something) so it's totally deserted and couldn't be more relaxing...
no doubt this has been discussed before, but does anyone know if they've rebuilt patnem yet? there was nowhere to eat/drink when i was there a couple of months ago.

That is what we are planning to do. Patnem was preferred because it is supposedly a bit quieter.

We tried to book in at 'Home' (http://www.homeispatnem.com/) but they were fully booked up for the start of January.

The Intercontineental Hotel was finished 3 years ago. And it's called Rajbag beach.

It all depends on what you require from a holiday. If plenty of restaurants and bars is what you're after then Palolem is for you. If it's peace and quiet then Patnem is your choice (or Agonda which really is a tranquill haeven).

We arrived in Palolem mid November and for the first few days it was quiet and getting ready for the influx of Winter visitors but by the second week it had become very busy with sunbeds littering the sand and bars encroaching right onto the beach.

In Patnem we stayed at the Namaste beach huts in Patnem which was excellent with very attentive and friendly staff and great food. If you drop by say hello to Sanjay from Graham & Jill.
