Palolem - on the ground update

I thought it might be useful to do a thread on what is happening on the ground in Palolem. I know there is one about what happened and why, but I thought maybe we could use this thread (or the other one) to keep people updated on what the situation is right now. I am currently in Arambol but I am still quite keen to get back to Palolem before I leave India ... if there is some time.

Is there anyone on the ground there who could provide an update? From the other thread, I have assumed that people will be trying to get accomodation ready for the official start date of 15th October but maybe there is too much to do in this time?

Any updates gratefully received!

From what i have heard- people are now waiting for the temperory licences to be re issued for the season and then it will be business as usual. They all say that this was politically motivated as the elections are coming up soon and the government wants to be seen as doing something

Cheers Luca. Does this mean that people will not even begin rebuilding until 15th Oct? If so, I guess that nothing will be ready until late October at the latest. Or are people rebuilding now so that they can take guests from 15th Oct? Sorry to ask so many questions - I thought you might know.

I would be surpised if people will build permanent structures, as it will only be torn down again.

Well, most of the stuff in Palolem was temperory anyway. It's a bit like the shacks all over north Goa. They are dismantled every year. Unfortunately, i think it will be early november before the licences are issued, so u probably will not have them by the 15th. However, a lot of places that are legal still do exist on the beach front and you can still get a decent room out there.

Hi,
Ordo Sousar is at the present time not open and is dismantled.
When the licenses get issued ...if they manage to get a license, they will most likely be operating in Nov sometime.
Very few places are currently operating and a few owners are slowly starting to build temp bamboo structures but all are awaiting the final decision from the local govt. There will not be nearly as many licenses issued this year and the policing of any illegal structures on the beach will be strict this season. Even the owners of the properties are complaining to the local govt about other shack owners who are building up before the official go ahead.Palolem is pretty busy but rooms are in short supply and there are a limited number of bars and restaurants open. This will change by the beginning of Nov.
